SPORTS SHORTS: MCC men split at Indian Hills tournament
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team went 1-1 at the Norris Asphalt Classic held Friday and Saturday at Indian Hills CC.
The Tigers (4-9) were defeated on Friday by North Dakota State College of Science. The Wildcats (10-2) outscored MCC 51-26 in the second half to break open a close game. Luke Christensen scored a game-high 28 points to lead NDSCS, while Jikany Deang had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Cham Okey added 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Wildcats, who made 10 3-pointers.
MCC was led by Pavle Djeric, who scored 13 points. Tre’Von Coney and Hassan Bush had 10 points apiece.
On Saturday, the Tigers toppled Lake Region State College, 96-83, to hand the Royals their fifth-straight loss. MCC got out to a 13-point halftime lead, 47-34, and kept the advantage there for the win.
Coney poured in seven of MCC’s 16 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 23 points, while Bush finished with 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Tom Guma got 15 points and seven boards, Antoine Glasper had 14 points and seven assists, and Tristan Christopher added 11 points. The Tigers finished 16-of-33 from 3-point range (48.5 percent) and committed just eight turnovers.
Remy Davis Warrington led Lake Region State College with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Tiger women sustain eighth-straight loss
IOWA FALLS — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team suffered its eighth-straight defeat, falling 57-37 to Ellsworth in Saturday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash.
The Tigers (3-8, 0-4) trailed 29-11 at halftime and couldn’t catch up in the conference contest between Iowa Valley Community College District rivals.
Asia Beale scored a game-high 20 points off the bench to lead Ellsworth (6-4, 2-2). Kana Nagashima and Yaiza Soriano Balaguer added 11 points apiece for the Panthers.
MCC got a team-high 13 points off the bench from Jaeda Turner. Mi Amor McQueen finished with nine points but eight of the Tigers’ 24 turnovers. Kenijae Cherry tallied six points, a game-high 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.
West Marshall boys win Wapsie Valley invitational
FAIRBANK — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team crowned three champions on its way to the team title at Wapsie Valley’s Chris Davis Invitational on Saturday.
The Trojans tallied 190 points to hold off Waukon (169) and South Winneshiek (151) in the 15-team tournament. Urijah Courter (120 pounds), Jon Gonzalez (132) and Riley Hanford (138) all won their respective brackets, while Kinnick Geers (157) suffered finals defeat.
Courter, the defending Class 2A 113-pound champion, improved to 6-0 on the season with two pins and a technical fall. He flattened Waukon’s Kolton Grotegut in 1:56 to take the 120 title.
Gonzalez (6-0) picked up three pins, including a 49-second decking of Wapsie Valley’s Kayden Bentley in the 132 finals, while Hanford (7-0) went 4-0 with three pins, including a third-period pin over Waukon’s Jaxon Regan in the 138 finals.
West Marshall had a pair of bronze medalists on the day with Landyn Gutierrez at 113 and Damian Ficken at 190.
Mustangs compete at Woodward-Granger tourney
WOODWARD — The East Marshall wrestling team scored seventh out of eight teams at Woodward-Granger’s Dennis Field Invitational on Saturday, finishing with 52.5 points.
The Mustangs were led by a pair of third-place finishes from Jordan Meling (144 pounds) and Deagan Madison (165). Meling went 3-1 on the day with only a semifinal loss, improving to 6-1 on the season with a pair of pins. Madison (3-4) was 2-2 with a pair of pins.
Hayden Boles (126) and Max Slifer (138) both finished fifth, while Landon Miller (150) and Alex Bautista (285) each scored sixth.
Trojan girls pummel Perry in league play
PERRY — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team got back to even in the Heart of Iowa Conference with a 54-16 romp over Perry on Friday night.
The Trojans (2-1, 1-1) got out to a 39-11 halftime lead and coasted from there. Halle Jones matched the host Jayettes with 16 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to go with six assists and five rebounds. Kinley Johnston tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Shelby Johnston finished with nine points, eight boards, four steals and four blocked shots.
Karagyn Whelchel led Perry (2-2, 0-2) with six points.
Mustang girls overtake AGWSR in second half
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team outscored AGWSR 33-15 after halftime to rally for a 53-38 triumph in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown.
The Mustangs (3-1, 1-1) trailed 23-20 at the half before blowing out the Cougars (0-3, 0-2) after the break.
Ashtyn Wheater had game-highs of 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead East Marshall. Addy Denham added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Sydney Hull had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Alivia Neuroth pitched in with nine points, seven assists, five boards and four steals off the bench.
Natalie Sizemore led AGWSR with 11 points.
Gile’s double-double helps West Marshall rally
PERRY — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team endured a five-point first half before rallying to overtake Perry 41-36 in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference meeting.
The Trojans (2-1, 1-1) trailed 9-5 at halftime before putting away the win in the second half.
Ryder Gile scored a team-high 15 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead West Marshall. Beckham DeSotel had eight points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Connor Kemmerer contributed five points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Gustavo Drahos scored 29 of Perry’s 36 points on 12-of-29 shooting, including three 3-pointers. He also led the Bluejays (1-2, 1-1) with eight rebounds, six steals and two assists.
East Marshall boys drop 10 treys on Cougars
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team beat AGWSR for the ninth-straight time, winning 76-46 in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League tilt.
The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0) outscored the Cougars by a 20-7 margin in the second quarter to pull away for good.
Jaxson Boswell had game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead East Marshall, making three of the team’s 10 3-pointers. Jackson Bidwell added 13 points and Cody Weaver finished with 12 points and five steals.
Bo Starr had 16 points and 10 boards to pace AGWSR (0-2, 0-2).
Comets overwhelmed by Meskwaki girls
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team sustained a decisive defeat in Iowa Star Conference South Division play, falling 67-13 at Meskwaki on Friday night.
The host Warriors (1-2, 1-1) forced BCLUW into 32 turnovers in the win, getting four double-digit scorers. Bree Scabbyrobe racked up 15 points and seven steals to lead Meskwaki, while Isabella Kapayou finished with 14 points.
Chloe Switzer scored six points to lead BCLUW (1-1, 1-1). Addison Moeller had four points, while Adelynn Zoske chipped in three points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
BCLUW boys blow out Valley Lutheran
CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ basketball team held Valley Lutheran scoreless in the third quarter of Thursday’s 88-21 trouncing in Iowa Star Conference play.
The Comets (2-0, 2-0) led 51-11 at the half before outscoring the Crusaders 17-0 in the third. Four players scored in double figures for the home team.
Adam Frank shot 4-of-5 from 3-point range and led BCLUW with 18 points to go with eight rebounds. Avery Schipper had 15 points and nine rebounds, Maddin Helms had 13 points, Owen Case chipped in 12 points and Wyatt Gould got 10.
Jason Neifer scored 12 points to lead Valley Lutheran (0-2, 0-2), which played just five players in the game.
