SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs succumb to Spartans’ second-half comeback
GRUNDY CENTER — A third quarter to forget foiled the East Marshall boys’ basketball team’s shot at stopping Grundy Center’s streak as the Spartans rallied for a 65-60 victory over the Mustangs in Tuesday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown between unbeaten teams.
East Marshall (3-1, 3-1) led 45-33 at halftime before getting outscored 18-3 in the third period.
Jackson Bidwell scored 16 points to lead the Mustangs in what became their 15th-straight loss to the Spartans (4-0, 4-0). Cody Weaver added 14 points, while Kael Koch came off the bench to score seven points.
GMG girls basketball gets another conference win
GARWIN — Skyler Murty scored a team-leading 12 points to propel the GMG girls’ basketball team to a 54-28 victory over Collins-Maxwell (0-6, 0-4) in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.
Murty also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for the Wolverines (3-4, 3-0). Taelyn Sash tallied 11 points and four of GMG’s 28 steals. Macie Sanders added eight points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Grace Mathern and Arianna Pierce pitched in six points apiece.
BCLUW girls bumped off by Colo-NESCO
COLO — The Colo-NESCO girls’ basketball team snapped a 10-game series skid against BCLUW with Tuesday’s 44-31 win in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.
The Royals (2-4) trailed early but took the lead and never let go to beat BCLUW for the first time since 2019.
Chloe Switzer scored a career-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds and seven steals to lead the Comets (1-3). Addison Moeller had four points and 18 rebounds, while Adelynn Zoske had two points and 10 boards.
Towne’s 3-0 night leads Storm to quadrangular sweep
CONRAD — Beau Towne went 3-0 with three pins to lead the South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team to a 3-0 showing at a home quadrangular on Tuesday.
Towne’s three pins at 165 pounds all came in the first period as the Storm scored wins over Belle Plaine (37-36), North Tama (42-34) and BGM (48-36).
Belle Plaine took six of the eight contested matches with SH-BCLUW — all by fall — but the Plainsmen’s four forfeits cost the team after the dual ended in a tie. The Storm took the match on criteria.
Garett Bruner (126) and Parker Pagel (138) both went 2-1 for the Storm, each recording one win by pin and another by forfeit.
SH-BCLUW girls go 2-0 in home triangular
CONRAD — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team tallied two wins in a home triangular on Tuesday, knocking off BGM (72-12) and North Tama (53-29).
Four wrestlers went 2-0 for the host Storm, with two of them — Leila Wedgwood (130 pounds) and Ceanna White (135) — both winning twice by fall. Taya Hollingsworth (155) went 2-0 with a victory by technical fall over North Tama’s Alaney Sienknecht. Sophie Rundall (115) won twice by forfeit for SH-BCLUW.
Khloe Neal (110) and Casadee White (140) both won a match by fall.
Tigerhawks top Wolverine girls in non-conference play
COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo claimed a back-and-forth battle over the GMG girls’ basketball team, prevailing 33-31 in Monday’s non-conference clash.
Isabelle Foglesong had 11 points and five steals to lead the host Tigerhawks (2-4). Mallory Sipma chipped in nine points.
Skyler Murty led GMG (2-4) with six points and 10 rebounds, and Makayla Pendleton added six points as well. Grace Mathern chipped in five points, Macie Sanders had four points and four steals, and Arianna Pierce pitched in four points.
