SPORTS SHORTS: Storm score 12th at competition-rich Battle of Waterloo
WATERLOO — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team finished in 12th place at the Dan Gable Museum’s Battle of Waterloo on Thursday at Waterloo East.
The Storm went 1-2 in pool play before going 1-1 in bracketed action, settling for 12th on a tiebreaker.
South Hardin-BCLUW opened the day with a victory over Denver, 54-29, before falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie (60-18) and Crestwood (48-36). The Storm opened bracketed play with a loss to Bettendorf, 54-30, but closed the tournament with a win over Independence, 48-36.
Taya Hollingsworth, ranked sixth at 155 pounds in Class 1A by IAwrestle, went 5-0 to lead the Storm. She had four pins on the day and received one forfeit.
Ceanna White (145) and Megyn Hollingsworth (170) both went 4-1. White had three pins, one forfeit, and her only loss was to second-ranked Lilli Cooper of Denver. Hollingsworth had two pins, two forfeits, and her lone loss was a 2-0 decision to No. 6 Addison Bowman of Prairie.
Hailee Robinson (105) was 3-2 with three pins, while Cheyenne Simmons (145) was 3-2 with two pins and a forfeit. Both of her losses were to ranked foes. Adrienne Caster (235) was 3-2 with a pin, two forfeits, and two losses to ranked wrestlers.
Leila Wedgwood (130) was 2-3 with two wins by pin.
SH-BCLUW boys swept in road triangular
WEST UNION — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team went 0-2 at the North Fayette Valley quadrangular on Thursday as the Storm fell to Denver, 70-10, and North Fayette Valley, 66-16.
Garett Bruner (126 pounds) and Sawyer Kane (190) were the only Storm wrestlers to go 2-0. Bruner won twice by major decision, while Kane received a forfeit from Denver before pinning NFV’s Reed Fagle in 2:46.
Logan Kolbe (215) added a pin for the Storm, beating NFV’s Drew Butikofer in one minute.
Pella Christian pours it on against West Marshall girls
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team led Pella Christian but briefly in an eventual 64-30 loss to the visiting Eagles on Thursday night.
Pella Christian (5-3) powered out to a 34-11 halftime advantage and continued to pull away from there.
Jessa De Vries made six 3-pointers and led Pella Christian with 18 points. Addie Van Arendonk added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Rachel Kacmarynski had 13 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
West Marshall (3-4) was led by Riley Randall and Halle Jones with six points apiece. Kinley Johnston added four points and four boards, while Jones had a team-high seven rebounds.
Mustangs silenced by Grundy Center defense
GRUNDY CENTER — The 10th-ranked Grundy Center girls’ basketball team held East Marshall to six points or fewer in all four quarters of Tuesday’s 71-12 Spartan victory in North Iowa Cedar League action.
The Spartans (7-0, 4-0) led 20-2 after the first quarter and cruised to their 23rd-straight win in the series.
Kali Aldrich scored a game-high 15 points to lead Grundy Center. Raelyn Steinmeyer added 14 points and Ava Mundt had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Sydney Hull led East Marshall (3-3, 1-3) with four points and six rebounds. Ashtyn Wheater had four points, three boards and two blocked shots, while Alivia Neuroth and Kiela Wolf both chipped in two points.
Kupka rallies GMG boys to non-conference triumph
COLFAX — The GMG boys’ basketball team overtook Colfax-Mingo late in the first quarter of an eventual 49-38 victory in Monday’s non-conference contest.
The Wolverines (2-3) led 11-6 after the first quarter and pulled away until the fourth quarter, when the host Tigerhawks (0-5) tried to rally.
Rider Kupka shot 11-of-22 from the field on his way to a game-high 27 points to lead GMG. He was 5-of-8 from 3-point range and added team-highs of seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Ethan Klemesrud finished with 13 points, Jacoby Woodbury had five and Easton Sash four.
Jace Lewis led Colfax-Mingo with 14 points and Wyatt Jay had 13 more.
West Marshall girls can’t keep up with Spartans
GRUNDY CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team fell behind from the outset and couldn’t catch 10th-ranked Grundy Center (6-0) in Monday’s 53-31 loss to the Spartans in non-conference play.
The Trojans (3-3) trailed 28-12 at halftime and couldn’t gain ground.
Kinley Johnston led West Marshall with nine points and six rebounds. Shelby Johnston chipped in four points, while Halle Jones, Rachel Randall, Olivia Randall and Nessa Mueller contributed three points apiece.
Trojans get balanced scoring against Saydel
DES MOINES — A flurry of a finish to the second quarter helped the West Marshall girls’ basketball team take the lead for good in a 61-34 win over Saydel in last Saturday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash inside the Casey’s Center.
Saydel (1-4) led 24-18 before getting outscored 11-0 to close out the first half. West Marshall (3-2) kept the momentum and outscored the Eagles 32-10 in the second half, including a 15-2 third-quarter advantage.
Kinley Johnston led the Trojans with 13 points and eight rebounds. Rachel Randall racked up 12 points, Riley Randall had 11 points and three steals, and Shelby Johnston finished with 10 points and seven boards. Nessa Mueller contributed six points and three steals off the bench.
Luella Weispfenning paced Saydel with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Lauren Frantz had 13 points and 15 boards.
