SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall wrestling team tops Iowa Falls-Alden Invite

IOWA FALLS — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team crowned three champions in winning the 18th annual Jones Brothers Tournament on Saturday at Iowa Falls-Alden.

Urijah Courter (120 pounds), Jon Gonzalez (126) and Kinnick Geers (157) all claimed bracket championships for the Trojans, who totaled 230 points to win the 11-team tournament. Iowa Falls-Alden (181), Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (153.5) and Iowa Valley (144) gave chase at the top of the standings. South Hardin-BCLUW came in ninth with 34.5 points.

Courter, ranked first at 120 by IAwrestle, won his title with two pins and a technical fall to improve to 15-0. Gonzalez, rated fifth, finished the day 5-0 with four pins and a 15-0 technical fall to move to 12-1 for the season. Geers (13-2) got three wins, all by pin, to win at 157.

West Marshall 14 top-five finishers in all, including four more runners-up in James Decker (132), Bryce Crawford (165), Connor Yakel (175) and Damian Ficken (190). Third-place honors went to Garrett Bear (106), Landyn Gutierrez (113), Ben Buck (144) and Jacob Dare (285).

Dutch Hillers (150) and Dalton Eldridge (175) both finished fourth for the Trojans, while Waylon Mumm (138) scored points for fifth.

SH-BCLUW was led by a runner-up finish for Garett Bruner at 126. Bruner (13-3) suffered his only loss in the opening round to West Marshall’s Gonzalez, bouncing back to win his next four matches.

Logan Kolbe (12-5) collected third place at 215, going 3-1 with only a semifinal loss to AP/GC’s Maison Copp. Sawyer Kane (5-4) scored sixth for the Storm at 215.

Redhawks turn back BCLUW in second half

CONRAD — North Tama used a strong second half to rally back to beat the BCLUW boys’ basketball team 59-47 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.

The Redhawks (5-2, 4-1) trailed 26-18 at the half before outscoring BCLUW 41-21 in the second half.

Kayler Morris scored season-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds in leading North Tama to victory. Brayton Cibula added 15 points and three blocked shots for the Redhawks.

Aiden Frank had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead BCLUW (4-3, 4-2) in defeat. Daniel Zoske also had a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards. Wyatt Gould chipped in with six points and four assists, but the Comets couldn’t overcome 23 turnovers.
