Aalsma leads Bulldogs to MVC triumph

DES MOINES — Four days after setting her career-high, Abbie Aalsma was at it again.
Aalsma scored 29 points to power the Drake women’s basketball team to an 89-75 victory over Southern Illinois, collecting the 1,000th win in program history.
Aalsma shot 12-for-19 from the field with three 3-pointers to pile up 29 points just four days after tallying a career-high 30 in a Missouri Valley Conference win at Illinois-Chicago.
Three more players scored in double figures to help the Bulldogs (4-9) improve to 3-0 in MVC action.
Anna Becker had 13 points and seven assists, Maggie Taylor got 12 points and six boards off the bench, and Quinn Vice had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Valley victory.
Indya Green had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern Illinois (3-9, 0-3). Jeniah Thompson also had a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards, but the Salukis just couldn’t keep pace with Drake in the second half.
Southern Illinois led 40-39 at the half before getting outscored 50-35 after the break.
