Busy Bobcats trample Tigers

The Marshalltown boys’ swimming team took to the pool for the fourth time in eight days and churned out 14 season-best times.

For some of Bobcats, they were their season-first times.

The Bobcats rolled out an irregular lineup and eased past Grinnell for a 114-56 victory on Monday night at the Marshalltown High School pool.

Marshalltown won eight of the 11 events, with brothers Kade and Eli Randall both contributing as part of four event victories while not necessarily swimming their regular races.

“We were able to move some things around,” said MHS head coach Raymond Dulaney. “We’re still trying to figure out a couple pieces for districts.

“It’s nice, I think it gives the boys a little mental break, too. It’s hard to pound the same events, trying to chase the same times every single time, so that was nice.”

Eli Randall won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 2 minutes, 6.38 seconds, and he claimed the 500 freestyle in a season-best 5:50.72. He also swam as part of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Kade Randall captured the 200 individual medley (2:19.96) and the 100 breaststroke in a season-best 1:10.27. He anchored the 200 medley relay to victory and swam the opener for the 200 freestyle relay.

The Bobcats’ 200 freestyle relay squad of Kade Randall, Parker Christen, Thomas Stanley and Jack Nelson won a come-from-behind race in 1:41.21. Nelson rallied the MHS quartet to victory, catching Grinnell (1:41.57) just before the finishing touch at the wall.

Stanley scored the top spot in the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 1:05.33, just ahead of Nelson’s season-best 1:05.94. Christen, in fourth place, swam a season-best 1:13.79.

“This was the first meet we’ve been able to be a little more lax and they handled it pretty well,” Dulaney said. “We’ve got some things to work on for Thursday, but that’s forever. We’ve always got things to work on.

“We still have one more meet this week and then a meet the following Monday, so it’s been busy.”

Grinnell wasn’t able to offer challenges across the board, but the Tigers sent a couple standouts to the pool. Wyatt Sumner scored two of his team’s three wins, taking the top spot in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle as well.

Dulaney used Sumner’s ability as an opportunity to challenge his own swimmers, with Jacob Seberger finishing second and Joe Greazel third behind Sumner in the 50 free.

MHS racked up a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breaststroke with Kade Randall, Elliot Kodis and Nelson topping the podium. The Bobcats swept the finale, going 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay as well.

Marshalltown is back in its home pool again Thursday, entertaining Des Moines East and Algona Bishop Garrigan for a triangular.

“It’s a double dual, which changes some things a bit with a little less flexibility,” said Dulaney. “We’ll be getting kids in some different events and maybe finalize some of those thoughts we have, especially on relays.”
