Heartwell’s career high helps MCC women snap skid

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team started the new year by ending an old trend, snapping an 11-game losing streak with a 74-49 romp over Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center.

Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers (4-11, 1-7), who last won on Nov. 7, 2025, against St. Louis Community College. This was also MCC’s first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference win since beating this same Southwestern program on Jan. 29, 2025, ending a 14-game conference losing streak.

Olivia Heartwell scored a career-high 18 points to lead five Tigers in double figures, and she also shared the team lead with eight rebounds. Shenell Stewart finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals, and Jazmine Williams added a career-high 12 points off the bench.

Ariyanah Custard and Kenijae Cherry both finished with 10 points, while Cherry had seven boards and five blocked shots.

MCC got outshot by the visiting Spartans (3-11, 0-7), but sent them to their eighth-straight loss by outrebounding them (42-32) and committing fewer turnovers (14-19). The Tigers also shot 27 free throws to Southwestern’s four.

Maddie Richter scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Spartans.

MCC is back at home Monday with a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game against North Central Missouri.

Starting at $4.38/week.
