MHS boys swim to 3rd at Wahawk Invitational
WATERLOO — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming squad closed out a three-meet week with a third-place finish at Waterloo West’s Wahawk Invite on Saturday at Central Middle School.
The Bobcats piled up 269 points to trail only Decorah (313) and Spencer (301), while Newton (239), Waterloo (125) and Vinton-Shellsburg (40) closed out the competition.
Marshalltown finished off the meet with its best result, earning a runner-up spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Eli Randall, Joe Greazel, Jack Nelson and Kade Randall rattled off a season-best time of 3 minutes, 39.20 seconds to trail only Decorah (3:33.62) in the last race of the day. The Bobcats’ second relay team in the race — Thomas Stanley, Zach Lasack, Zepplin McCulley, Aaron Hunter — placed fifth in 4:01.40.
The Bobcats had four third-place finishes as well, starting in the 200 individual medley as a trio of Marshalltown swimmers scored top-eight finishes. Kade Randall led the MHS attack in third place (2:14.48), Eli Randall was fourth (2:20.09) and Joe Greazel came away with eighth (2:28.96).
Jacob Seberger scored the bronze in the 50 freestyle, timing in at 23.98. Newton’s Finn Martin won one of his three golds on the day with a time of 21.25.
Thomas Stanley led another Bobcat trio to the podium in the 500 freestyle, securing third in 5:40.89. Jack Nelson took fifth (5:55.75) and Aaron Hunter scored seventh (6:00.97).
Seberger bagged another bronze in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.82. Teammate Parker Christen took sixth in 1:10.04.
“Coach Lucas (Santefort) and I are very pleased with the results from this meet!” said MHS head coach Raymond Dulaney. “We had a meet-heavy week and came back and swam to a season-best in powerpoints and great times. We talked about mental toughness on Friday and keeping the energy up as we are tired. The team responded and competed well.
“This was a new meet for us and it was great competition across all 11 events.”
Eli Randall (1:02.32) and Zepplin McCulley (1:04.46) both came away with season-best times in finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 butterfly, while Hunter narrowly missed his top time (1:07.05) in placing sixth in the backstroke with a time of 1:07.28.
Marshalltown is back in the pool on Tuesday, hosting Grinnell for a 5:30 p.m. dual meet at MHS.
