MHS rains 14 3-pointers on Mason City

MASON CITY — Drake Gersema scored a career-high 24 points, Kyle Smith poured in seven 3-pointers and the Marshalltown boys’ basketball team ran its series streak to four games over Mason City, beating the Riverhawks 64-53 on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats (9-5, 4-1) sank 14 3-pointers in all, with Smith going 7-for-11 from distance and Gersema swishing 4-for-4. Jacob Hayes had a pair of treys and contributed eight points and a team-leading seven rebounds as Marshalltown caught the Riverhawks from behind after a slow start.
Mason City (5-8, 1-4) led 15-8 after the opening period before the Bobcats outscored them 20-11 in the second period. Marshalltown’s two-point halftime lead, 28-26, grew to 48-42 going into the fourth, and the Bobcats continued to open the deficit before the final buzzer sounded.
“I think for the most part we took some good shots,” said MHS head coach Michael Appel. “Just sharing the ball when they’re in that zone, finding guys when we’re open and set — those are pretty good shots for some of our guys.
“Once you kinda see the ball go in like that, we can get it going so that was nice to see.”
Marshalltown made eight 3-pointers in the first half, with six of them coming in that critical second-quarter surge.
Damian Segovia sank a triple and contributed five points. Smith chipped in five rebounds, Niehouse four and Larrs Schoenfelder three, while Gersema tallied five assists and Misek three more.
Marcele Whitner led Mason City with 23 points and Jameer Falls finished with 13.
