Senior relay caps celebration
Marshalltown puts exclamation point on Senior Night win over Bishop Garrigan
The Marshalltown boys’ swimming team has two more home meets left on its schedule, but Senior Night just hits different.
The Bobcats added Bishop Garrigan of Algona early enough that the Golden Bears still made the trip to the Marshalltown High School pool on Thursday, even though the originally scheduled opponent — Des Moines East — had to cancel due to its roster being rocked by illness this week.
Marshalltown maintained its focus and turned back the Bears for a 107-53 victory, capping the meet with an all-senior victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
“Those four seniors have given us a lot,” said MHS first-year head coach Raymond Dulaney. “We have a whole range of kids.”
From seniors who only started swimming a year ago to those who have been in the varsity lineup since their freshman campaign, Marshalltown’s senior quartet came together in the last race of the night to finish the meet with a meaningful win.
MHS seniors Logan Anderson, Armando Estrada, Kade Randall and Maverick Gibson closed the evening with a first-place finish with a time of 4 minutes, 32.54 seconds. Another Bobcat foursome swam as an exhibition relay, with James Czerniewski, Jacob Seberger, Joe Greazel and Eli Randall finishing with a faster time of 4:19.41.
But this night belonged to the seniors.
“For Senior Night, it’s just such a big moment,” said Kade Randall, a four-year varsity contributor. “It’s kind of surreal that it’s my turn. In the past, those seniors have always just been someone to look up to and lead the team. I just seem them as like big brothers almost — they’re the people I can look up to and trust, and I know they’ve got my back.
“I’m just being that leader for everyone else on the team and making sure that we have those leaders because I think that’s a really important part of any team.”
Marshalltown won seven of the 11 events on the night, with Kade Randall contributing to three of them. In addition to the relay finale, he finished atop the podium in the 50 freestyle (23.93) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.08). He also led off for the runner-up team in the 200 medley relay, as he was joined by Eli Randall, Parker Christen and Estrada.
“Armando has spent three years at it and he’s been the kid who’s decided to work at it and has seen the improvements this year,” Dulaney said. “He’s scoring varsity points for us.”
Christen, a junior, got two individual wins as well, claiming the 500 freestyle (5:59.69) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.10). Seberger, also a junior, got a win in the 200 individual medley (2:23.76), and Greazel, a sophomore, scored first place in the 200 freestyle (2:07.67).
The 400 freestyle relay finale was the cherry on top of the night’s proceedings.
“[This meet] gave us a lot of flexibility,” Dulaney said. “We were able to ask the seniors what they wanted to swim and we put together that senior relay because we had some room to move things around, which is fun.”
“It was a great opportunity to celebrate,” Kade Randall said.
The Bobcats have the week off from competition after swimming five meets within 10 days. Marshalltown’s next event is a home dual on Monday against Fort Dodge. Ames hosts the Iowa Alliance Conference meet on Saturday, Jan. 24.
