SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys blast Mason City matmen

The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team rolled through Mason City for a 53-24 dual meet victory on Thursday night inside the Roundhouse.

The Bobcats benefited from the Riverhawks’ five forfeits and got three pins along the way to the Iowa Alliance Conference win.

Marshalltown (12-6) only won four of the nine contested matches, however, as Mason City scored its 24 points without the benefit of a Bobcat forfeit.

The Bobcats got pins from Jamis Piscitelli (106 pounds), Anthony Chavez (157) and Carson Wright (165). Ignacio Macias (285) closed out the match with a 20-3 technical fall over Lincoln Ward to send the fans home early.

Riverhawks handle Marshalltown girls

The Mason City girls’ wrestling team won nine of 11 contested matches and handed Marshalltown a 56-24 defeat on Thursday night at MHS.

The Riverhawks’ lineup featured three ranked wrestlers, all of which earned pins for the visitors. Mason City tallied six pins in all and tacked on one forfeit from the Bobcats.

All of Mason City’s nine match wins came with bonus points.

Marshalltown received two forfeits and picked up a pair of pins as well. Faith Sommerlot returned to the lineup with a second-period pin at 125 pounds, and Nevaeh Gonzales scored a third-period pin at heavyweight.

West Marshall boys pound out HOAIC wins

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team piled up the pins in a Heart of Iowa Conference sweep on Thursday night.

The Trojans tackled Saydel 76-3 and beat Nevada 59-24 in league action, racking up three pins against Saydel and nine against Nevada.

Saydel offered up nine forfeits to West Marshall. The Trojans got their three pins from Garrett Bear (106 pounds), Dalton Eldridge (175) and Damian Ficken (190), while Zander Lovelace scored a major decision at 215.

Ficken contributed one of the Trojans’ nine pins against Nevada as well. The other eight pins came from Landyn Gutierrez (113), Urijah Courter (120), Jon Gonzalez (126), James Decker (132), Ben Buck (144), Kinnick Geers (150), Dutch Hillers (157) and Jacob Dare (285). Bear made it a 2-0 night with a technical fall at 106.

Storm girls stamp out opposition in home triangular

ELDORA — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team went 3-0 in a home quadrangular meet on Thursday night at South Hardin High School.

The Storm scored wins over AGWSR (72-12), Iowa Falls-Alden (54-30) and Meskwaki (78-0).

Leila Wedgwood (130 pounds), Ceanna White (135) and Cheyenne Simmons (145) each had two of the Storm’s 11 pins on the night. Hailee Robinson (105), Brayleigh Gardner (120), Reese Schaffer (125), Casadee White (140) and Taya Hollingsworth (155) each added a pin to the total.

SH-BCLUW boys suffer defeat in NICL triangular

ELDORA — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team went 0-2 in a North Iowa Cedar League triangular at home Thursday night at South Hardin High School.

The Storm fell to Jesup, 69-12, and Dike-New Hartford/Grundy Center, 45-30, earning five match wins on the night.

Beau Towne was the lone SH-BCLUW wrestler to go 2-0, pinning Jesup’s Tyce Larson and DNH/GC’s Gabe Reicks at 157 pounds.

Garett Bruner (126) and Logan Kolbe (215) both had pins against Dike-New Hartford/GC, and Brock Collins picked up a pin at 285 against Nick Tempus.

Mustangs no match for North Iowa Cedar League foes

LE GRAND — The East Marshall wrestling team suffered a pair of North Iowa Cedar League defeats on Thursday night, falling 45-24 to AGWSR and 29-18 to Wapsie Valley.

The Mustangs’ only match wins came against AGWSR. Carter Charma (120 pounds) pinned Alex Meyer in 2 minutes, 30 seconds, and Max Slifer (144) flattened Austin Smith in 1:01.

East Marshall received five forfeits on the night.
