SPORTS SHORTS: Coney’s 27 helps MCC men get past Grand View JV

Tre’Von Coney matched his season-high with 27 points to lead the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball to a 75-67 victory over the Grand View University junior varsity squad on Monday night.

The Tigers (6-15) also got a career-high 22 points from Hassan Bush, who shot 10-of-11 from the field in the win. Tom Guma contributed 11 points, Tavon Rhodes scored six and Tristan Christopher five as MCC’s starters scored 71 of the team’s 75 points.

Coney finished 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point range as MCC started a three-game week with a win. Bush had team-highs of seven rebounds and three blocked shots as well.

Frankie Chiodo and Brody Ingold both made five 3-pointers and totaled 25 and 19 points, respectively, to lead the Grand View JV.

Tiger women force OT only to fall to Raiders

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit to force overtime, only to fall 85-79 to Central (Neb.) on Saturday at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (5-15) suffered their third-straight loss despite outscoring Central 25-16 in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 76-all. MCC got a 3-pointer from Mi Amor Mcqueen with eight seconds left to force overtime, and Jazmine Williams sank a trey on the first possession of overtime to give the Tigers the lead.

MCC made four of its 22 turnovers in the extra period, however, and didn’t score again.

Lexi Fiscus made seven 3-pointers and led all players with 33 points and 12 rebounds as the visiting Raiders (6-13) snapped a six-game losing skid. She scored her team’s first seven points of overtime. Jayla Merrill added 15 points and four steals.

Shenell Stewart had 24 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead MCC. Mcqueen finished with five 3-pointers and 18 points, and Ariyanah Custard had 13 points and four steals. Kenijae Cherry tallied seven points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Sauk Valley escapes MCC with non-conference victory

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team gave away a chance to play into overtime in a 59-58 loss to Sauk Valley on Saturday at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (5-15) trailed by three points with 40 seconds left but got to within one when Chason St. Vil converted an inbounds play with a layup. Sauk Valley missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw chance, and Tre’Von Coney made 1-of-2 at the other end with 14 seconds left to tie it at 58-all.

Sauk Valley’s Myles Perkins was fouled by Coney dribbling up the court with 10 seconds left, and Perkins made his first of two foul shots. Coney’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, leaving the Tigers one point short.

Carlos Perez led Sauk Valley (11-8) with 11 points, while Perkins and Jermaine Jones scored 10 points apiece.

Tristan Christopher got 15 points and nine rebounds to lead MCC in defeat. Sean Conway contributed 11 points off the bench and Coney finished with 10 points.
