SPORTS SHORTS: Kirkwood takes no mercy on MCC women
CEDAR RAPIDS — Thirteen different players scored as fifth-ranked Kirkwood clobbered the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team 89-29 in Wednesday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference contest.
The host Eagles (15-2, 9-1) got 42 points off the bench and had five double-digit scorers, led by Dasia Foster’s 16 points and six rebounds. Claire Hudson hit four 3-pointers for 12 points, Olivia Wren and Madison Stowater tallied 11 points apiece, and Kaci Crum finished with 10 points.
The shorthanded Tigers (5-14, 2-9) had just six players in action for the league loss. Shenell Stewart led MCC with eight points and two steals, while Jazmine Williams and Zaryah Snell scored six points apiece. Olivia Heartwell had four points and a team-leading five rebounds, and Mi Amor Mcqueen chipped in three points.
MCC hosts Central (Neb.) in a non-conference game Saturday at 1 p.m.
Spartans slip past Mustangs in fourth quarter
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team couldn’t hold off Class 2A No. 7 Grundy Center as the Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter for a 65-58 win in Tuesday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown.
The Spartans (10-0, 9-0) outscored East Marshall 28-19 in the fourth quarter to overcome a two-point deficit entering the final frame.
Ethan Meester shot 7-of-9 from 3-point range and finished with a career-high 26 points to lead Grundy Center. Ryder Slifer finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Judd Jirovsky got 13 points, five boards, five assists and three steals.
Jackson Busch led East Marshall (7-3, 6-3) with a season-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, and Jackson Bidwell got 12 points. Cody Weaver contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, Cael Curphy chipped in 10 points, and Blake Neuroth notched eight points and five assists.
Grundy Center grinds up East Marshall girls
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team was limited to one field goal in each of four quarters in a 55-11 loss to Class 2A No. 10 Grundy Center (11-1, 9-1) in North Iowa Cedar League play here Tuesday.
Alivia Neuroth made two 3-pointers on her way to six points, and Sydney Hull added another 3-pointer and finished with five points as the duo scored all 11 points for the Mustangs (4-8, 1-8). Ashtyn Wheater had a team-high five rebounds.
Coney’s season-high helps Tigers top Mount Mercy JV
Tre’Von Coney scored a season-high 24 points to help the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team break a five-game losing streak with a 94-65 victory over the Mount Mercy junior varsity on Tuesday night at the Student Activity Center.
Coney shot 9-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range on his way to a game-high scoring night. Hassan Bush had 18 points helped by 8-of-10 free-throw shooting, and Pavle Djeric added 12 points off the bench. Tom Guma got 11 points and six rebounds, while Tristan Christopher pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.
Nico Battaglia led Mount Mercy with 16 points, making five of the Mustangs’ 10 3-pointers.
MCC continues its seven-game homestand with Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against Sauk Valley.
Ranked PCM pushes past West Marshall girls
STATE CENTER — Class 3A No. 7 PCM led from the outset in an eventual 54-32 victory over the West Marshall girls’ basketball team in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
The Mustangs (12-1, 9-0) scored their 11th win in a row to remain unbeaten in HOIAC play.
Tori Lindsay led PCM with 20 points and Kara Naeve finished with 12 points.
Halle Jones and Shelby Johnston scored 10 points apiece to pace West Marshall (5-8, 3-6). Jones made two 3-pointers and had four assists, but the Trojans couldn’t overcome 20 turnovers.
Olivia Randall and Dalaney Eldridge pitched in with four points apiece.
West Marshall boys fall to conference frontrunner
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team got overtaken in the second half of a 43-34 loss to PCM in Heart of Iowa Conference action here Tuesday.
The visiting Mustangs (8-4, 6-3) outscored West Marshall 26-16 in the second half to score the win. Chase Wagaman led PCM with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots, and Kevin Thomas added 10 points.
Connor Kemmerer paced West Marshall (5-7, 4-5) with 13 points and Ryder Gile had 12, but the Trojans suffered their fourth-straight loss. Tyson Bunting chipped in five points.
Mustangs shoot for century mark against Comets
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team scored at least 22 points in all four quarters of its 101-33 non-conference victory over BCLUW on Monday night.
The Mustangs (7-2) got out to a 31-9 lead after the opening quarter and cruised to the century mark.
Jackson Bidwell scored a team-high 19 points to lead East Marshall, sinking three 3-pointers. Blake Neuroth made four treys and finished with a season-high 18 points, Jaxson Boswell added 13 points and a team-leading seven rebounds, and Dallas Miller chipped in a career-high 11 points.
The Mustangs shot 10-of-20 from 3-point range in the win.
No statistics were available for BCLUW (5-6), which suffered its third-straight loss.
