SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang boys get back at South Hardin
ELDORA — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team avenged an earlier loss with Tuesday’s 64-59 victory over South Hardin in North Iowa Cedar League play.
The Mustangs (9-3, 8-3) outscored the host Tigers (7-6, 5-6) 38-30 in the second half to overcome a three-point deficit at the intermission.
Jackson Bidwell got 20 points to lead East Marshall, making four 3-pointers. Jackson Busch scored 13 points, Blake Neuroth had 12 points and Cody Weaver added nine in the win.
BCLUW blows out Meskwaki boys in league play
CONRAD — Five players scored in double figures as the BCLUW boys’ basketball team blasted Meskwaki 74-28 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.
The host Comets (7-7, 6-3) were led by Daniel Zoske’s 15 points and 10 rebounds. Aiden Frank finished with 13 points thanks to 11-for-13 free-throw shooting, while Wyatt Gould, Avery Schipper and Ethan Shadlow had 10 points apiece. Shadlow added nine rebounds and six assists, while Eathan Petermeier had seven boards and five steals to get the season sweep over Meskwaki (1-12, 1-8).
Slow start dooms East Marshall girls
ELDORA — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a scoreless first quarter in Tuesday’s 69-22 loss to South Hardin in North Iowa Cedar League action.
The Mustangs (5-9, 2-9) trailed 29-11 by halftime and couldn’t catch up the host Tigers (6-7, 5-6).
Sydney Hull and Ashtyn Wheater scored eight points apiece to lead East Marshall. Kiela Wolf had a team-leading seven rebounds and Wheater added six boards in the loss. Alivia Neuroth and Mya Gould pitched in with three points apiece.
Thunder thwart West Marshall girls in HOIAC action
DES MOINES — Maiah Murphy scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Grand View Christian girls’ basketball team past West Marshall for a 59-46 Heart of Iowa Conference win on Tuesday.
Murphy shot 11-of-11 from the free-throw line and added seven assists and five steals for the Thunder (11-3, 8-3). Sophie Bird added 13 points.
Halle Jones was the lone double-digit scorer for West Marshall (6-9, 4-7), leading the team with 16 points as well as seven rebounds. Shelby Johnson, Olivia Randall and Nessa Mueller had six points apiece, while Nelle Kemmerer contributed four points and four assists.
Trojans tumble against Grand View Christian
DES MOINES — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team suffered its sixth-straight loss, falling 67-31 to Grand View Christian in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.
Brayden Hoben scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Thunder (7-6, 7-4) to their fifth win in a row. Colton Hoben added 12 points.
Teegun Edler scored eight points to lead the Trojans (5-9, 4-7). Ryder Gile had seven points, Evan Siegert six and Connor Kemmerer five.
Coney comes through again for MCC men
Tre’Von Coney scored in double figures for the sixth game in a row, racking up a game-high 22 points to lead the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team to a 94-62 romp over the Graceland University’s junior varsity squad on Tuesday night at the Student Activity Center.
Coney, who shot 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3-point range, is averaging 19.5 points over the Tigers’ last six games.
MCC (7-15) closed out its seven-game homestand with back-to-back wins. The Tigers got out to a 48-30 halftime lead and continued to pull away from Graceland.
Tristan Christopher had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Antoine Glasper made four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points in his return to the lineup. Tavon Rhodes got 13 points and five boards, while Sean Conway had six points, six assists and six rebounds.
Geo Alber scored 16 points off the bench to lead Graceland.
