SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs too much for BCLUW girls

LE GRAND — Three players scored in double figures as the East Marshall girls’ basketball team overwhelmed BCLUW in the second half of a 59-23 victory in Monday’s non-conference contest.

Mya Gould made five 3-pointers for East Marshall and led all scorers with 15 points. Alivia Neuroth added four treys en route to 14 points, and Sydney Hull had three triples and 14 points. The Mustangs (4-7) made 15 3-pointers in all to help snap a six-game losing skid.

Chloe Switzer scored 12 points to lead BCLUW (1-8), which suffered its eighth-straight loss. Adelynn Zoske added five points. The Comets were within 22-14 at the half but got outscored 37-9 the rest of the way.

Carlisle clouts Trojans in non-conference hoops

STATE CENTER — Trey Osterhaus scored 30 points to power Carlisle past the West Marshall boys’ basketball team for a 62-37 victory in Monday’s non-conference tilt.

The host Trojans (5-6) were led by Teegun Edler with 12 points. Ryder Gile added eight points and Evan Siegert scored seven in the loss. Cameron Kouba contributed five points as well.

Tiger men sustain fifth loss in a row

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team suffered its fifth-straight loss, falling 95-65 to No. 18 Kirkwood on Monday night at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (4-14) led early, 10-5, but never regained the lead once they fell behind. An 11-1 run by the visiting Eagles (13-5) provided the last lead chance of the game.

Manasse Kasongo scored 20 points to lead Kirkwood to its third win in a row. Ben Bockman made five 3-pointers and had 17 points, and Yaris Irby added 12 points off the bench. Kirkwood shot 64.8 percent (35-for-54) from the field.

Tre’Von Coney scored a game-high 22 points to lead MCC in defeat. Tristan Christopher finished with 13 points, while Hassan Bush had 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

West Marshall girls wrestle to third at Ballard

HUXLEY — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team beat host Ballard to take third place at Monday’s Ballard Women’s Duals.

The Trojans opened with a narrow win over Clarinda, 42-40, before falling to eventual tournament champion Carlisle, 63-18. West Marshall ousted the host Bombers 42-30 in the third-place match.

Kielly Kasal was West Marshall’s only undefeated wrestler on the day, going 3-0 with a pin and two forfeits at 100 pounds. Reese Buschbom (190) posted two pins in a 2-1 day, while Sophia Beebe (120) and Reagan Buschbom (235) both went 2-1 with a pin and a forfeit.

Grace Greenwood (140) and Sienna Edler (145) both had pins in the win over Clarinda, while Evalyn Clark (115) and Jalyn Ridout (130) contributed pins to help beat Ballard.

Storm score one win at own duals tourney

CONRAD — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team went 1-4 at its own Storm Duals on Saturday at BCLUW High School.

The Storm were defeated by Mason City Newman (36-36, criteria), Hudson (54-24), Dike-New Hartford/Grundy Center (54-24) and Southeast Polk JV (54-23) before beating South Hamilton 36-36 via tiebreaker criteria.

Garett Bruner led SH-BCLUW by going 5-0 on the day with four pins and one technical fall while wrestling at both 126 and 132 pounds. Beau Towne (165-175), Sawyer Kane (190) and Logan Kolbe (215-285) each finished 4-1 with three pins and a forfeit.

Ben Viles (175) earned the Storm’s only other match win with a pin against Mason City Newman.

East Marshall matmen 17th at Benton invite

VAN HORNE — The East Marshall wrestling team finished last out of 17 squads at Benton Community’s Jerry Eckenrod Invitational on Saturday.

The Mustangs totaled 17 points in the event, which was won by Don Bosco with 249 points. Dallas Center-Grimes (198) and Independence (181.5) rounded out the top three.

Jordan Meling claimed the top outcome on the day for East Marshall, earning third place at 138 pounds. Meling (14-6) went 4-1 with only a semifinal loss to West Delaware’s Kooper Waugh, winning once by fall and three times by decision.

Alex Bautista was the Mustangs’ only other placewinner, taking eighth at 215.

Courter leads Trojan boys to third at Glen Brand Duals

CLARION — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team finished third out of five at the Glen Brand Duals hosted Saturday by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

The Trojans went 2-2 on the day, starting with losses to Decorah (56-19) and the host Cowboys (55-21). West Marshall bounced back by besting Ballard (60-21) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL (36-36) via tiebreaker criteria.

Top-ranked Urijah Courter came away with a 4-0 day at 120 pounds, piling up three pins and a technical fall to lead the Trojans. Landyn Gutierrez (113), Jon Gonzalez (126) and Jacob Dare (285) all finished 3-1, while James Decker (132), Ben Buck (144) and Kinnick Geers (150) each went 2-2. Decker and Geers both had two pins.

Wilson Buckey went 2-1 in his three matches at 190, while Koltt Kelber won his only match by fall at 106.

Iowa Central capitalizes against MCC women

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team couldn’t get the shots to drop in a 57-43 loss to Iowa Central on Saturday inside the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (5-13) shot just 20.6 percent from the field (14-of-68) and 4.2 percent (1-of-24) from 3-point range in the loss.

Shenell Stewart led MCC with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Olivia Heartwell added 15 points and 10 boards. Zaryah Snell pitched in with six points and seven rebounds. Tigers starting center Kenijae Cherry went down with an injury on the opening tipoff and did not return.

Izzy Bassett made five 3-pointers and led Iowa Central (13-4) with 21 points.

West Marshall girls take fifth in own 15-team tourney

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team finished fifth at its own Trojan Tangle last Saturday, scoring 115 points powered by four runner-up results.

Raccoon River-Northwest (Waukee, Waukee Northwest, ADM and Van Meter) piled up 307.5 points to win the team title, followed by Woodward-Granger (167), Carroll (127.5) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL (116) in the 15-team event.

Kielly Kasal (100 pounds), Elyse Ranson (155), Bella Sosa (170) and Reese Buschbom (190) each reached their respective championship matches before suffering defeat. Kasal (20-7) had two pins before getting outscored 8-6 by Raccoon River’s Mya Van Beek in the finals; Ranson (24-6) had two pins before a 6-1 loss to Bella Bruins of Raccoon River; Sosa (17-5) scored two pins before a loss by fall to H-D-C’s Elsie Kuper; and Buschbom (20-8) had two pins before a 7-2 loss to Maren Subbert of H-D-C.

Zoey Wignall (16-14) had the busiest day on the mats, wrestling six times and going 4-2 on her way to fifth place at 125. All four of her wins came via pinfall.
