SPORTS SHORTS: Slow start holds back Mustangs at Hudson
HUDSON — A 10-point first-quarter deficit was too much of a hole for the East Marshall boys’ basketball team to dig out of as the Mustangs fell 63-57 at Hudson on Saturday.
The host Pirates (8-6, 6-6) got out to an 18-8 lead after the opening period and held off East Marshall the rest of the way. Anderson Yoder led Hudson with 17 points and five assists, while Tade Roberts had 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Jackson Bidwell scored a game-high 25 points to go with five rebounds and five steals to lead East Marshall (10-4, 9-4). Blake Neuroth finished with 15 points and Jackson Busch added nine points.
Southeastern storms past Tigers in second half
WEST BURLINGTON — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team lost a tale of two halves against Southeastern on Saturday night, falling 71-54 in its Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I opener.
The Tigers (7-16, 0-1) led 34-31 at halftime, but the host Blackhawks (10-9, 1-1) doubled up MCC in the second half, 40-20.
Southeastern’s starters scored 64 of the team’s 71 points, led by Aric Hines with 20 points. Trevan Krumrei added 14 points, Prophet Fields had 11 points and six assists, and Jaleel Donley had 10 points and nine rebounds.
MCC was led by Tre’Von Coney with 20 points and Hassan Bush with 16 points, both making four 3-pointers. The Tigers were 10-of-31 from distance but attempted just 24 shots from inside the arc and only got to the free-throw line two times (0-for-2).
Sean Conway scored nine points off the bench, while Tom Guma totaled four points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots in the loss.
Ranked Lakers too much for MCC women
ESTHERVILLE — The 14th-ranked Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team defeated Marshalltown Community College on Saturday in conference play, prevailing 75-39.
The Lakers (15-5, 11-2) shot 60 percent from the field and made just three turnovers in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference triumph. Makyia Kenney had 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench to lead Iowa Lakes.
Shenell Stewart scored 13 points to pace MCC (5-17, 2-12), which sustained its fifth loss in a row. Jazmine Williams had nine points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Zaryah Snell chipped in six points off the bench.
Trojan boys tripped up by Baxter
BAXTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team suffered its seventh-straight loss, falling 56-43 to host Baxter on Thursday night.
The Trojans (5-10) were led by Connor Kemmerer with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Teegun Edler with 14 points. Evan Siegert pitched in with five points, Jacob Eirikson had four, and Tyson Bunting added four.
Eli Dee scored a game-high 30 points to power Baxter (11-4) to its fifth win in a row. Cael Wishman added 10 points for the Bolts.
