SPORTS SHORTS: Stuelke named Naismith National Player of the Week
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior forward Hannah Stuelke was named the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Player of the Week on Monday.
Stuelke led the Hawkeyes to three wins over AP top-15 opponents in an eight-day span last week, averaging 17.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game while shooting 55 percent from the field.
Stuelke finished Sunday’s win over Ohio State with 18 points and 15 rebounds, registering her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.
Deal, Heiden sweep Big Ten weekly honors
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa women’s basketball players Ava Heiden and Addie Deal both earned weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference as announced Monday.
Heiden, a sophomore forward, was named the Player of the Week, while Deal scored her second-straight Freshman of the Week honor.
Heiden and Deal helped lead the Hawkeyes to three-straight regular-season wins over AP top-15 opponents for the first time in program history. Iowa beat No. 15 Michigan State, No. 15 Maryland and No. 12 Ohio State in an eight-day stretch last week.
Heiden had 20 points and eight rebounds in the win over Maryland, and followed with 18 points, eight boards and a career-high four steals against Ohio State. She has scored in double figures in all nine conference games this season.
Deal stepped up in the wake of Taylor McCabe’s injury and tallied 20 points, five assists and three rebounds in Sunday’s win over Ohio State. Her 20 points were the most by a freshman since Caitlin Clark in 2021.
Williams earns first Big 12 weekly honor
AMES — Iowa State junior guard Jada Williams has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Williams averaged 31.5 points and 7.5 assists per game in a pair of wins for the Cyclones last week. Both numbers led all of the Big 12 during the week.
Williams torched Cincinnati for a career-high 44 points during a 93-68 win last Wednesday, leading the Cyclones out of a five-game losing skid. With her eight assists, Williams played a part in 62 of Iowa State’s 93 points in the game, the highest percentage by a single player in NCAA Division I action this season. Williams’ 44 points set a new Hilton Coliseum record for a Cyclone player in conference play, and she followed it up with 19 points and seven assists in Saturday’s win over Arizona — her former team.
For the week, Williams shot 15-of-22 (68 percent) from the field.
UNI’s Twedt picks up first Valley weekly honor
ST. LOUIS — Northern Iowa women’s basketball player Jenna Twedt has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
This marks the first MVC weekly honor for Twedt, who led the entire conference in scoring with 50 points last week.
Twedt, an Atkins native and Benton Community graduate, scored 20 points in UNI’s win over Murray State. It was the Racers’ first MVC loss of the season. She followed it up with a career-high 30 points in a loss to Evansville.
Twedt made a career-best six 3-pointers against Evansville, marking the high game in the Valley last week, and added a league-best eight free throws.
Drake’s Quinn commended by Valley
ST. LOUIS — Drake men’s basketball player Jalen Quinn has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Quinn led Drake to a 2-0 week with wins over Murray State and Indiana State, averaging 30.5 points per game along the way. He scored a career-high 34 points against Murray State and 27 more against Indiana State. Quinn’s 34 points marked the second-best output by an MVC player this season and tied for No. 40 on Drake’s all-time single-game scoring list.
Quinn shot 25-for-42 (59.5 percent) and added 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 sterals per game for the week.
