SPORTS SHORTS: Tiger women take down Southeastern, 58-49
WEST BURLINGTON — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team won its second-straight Iowa Community College Athletic Conference contest, beating Southeastern 58-49 on Wednesday at Loren Walker Arena.
The Tigers (5-12, 2-7) got out to a fast start, leading 15-7 after the opening quarter, and that margin carried the team to victory.
Shenell Stewart scored a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds in the MCC win. Olivia Heartwell had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Mi Amor Mcqueen contributed 11 points off the bench. Zaryah Snell matched her career-high with seven points, while Kenijae Cherry had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Trinity Barrett led Southeastern (6-10, 1-7) with 13 points and eight rebounds.
MCC entertains Iowa Central on Saturday at 1 p.m.
South Hardin puts away Mustang boys
LE GRAND — South Hardin used a strong second half to knock off the East Marshall boys’ basketball team in a 65-62 North Iowa Cedar League victory on Tuesday.
The visiting Tigers (5-2, 5-2) outscored East Marshall 37-25 in the second half to steal the win from the Mustangs (5-2, 5-2).
Jackson Bidwell led East Marshall with 26 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Cody Weaver chipped in 13 points, eight boards and three blocked shots, and Blake Neuroth added 11 points.
Jake Balvanz scored 26 points to pace South Hardin.
Trojan girls end losing skid at Greene County’s expense
JEFFERSON — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team snapped a four-game slide with a 66-30 victory over Greene County in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
The Trojans (4-6, 3-4) held the host Rams to two points in the second quarter to steam into halftime with a 30-12 lead.
Shelby Johnston led West Marshall with a game-high 17 points. Dalaney Eldridge added nine points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Nessa Mueller had eight points. Halle Jones added seven points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Rachel Randall also scored seven points. Nelle Kemmerer pitched in with six points and four boards off the bench.
Becca Anderson scored 12 points to lead Greene County (3-7, 2-5).
West Marshall boys withstand Rams, 48-34
JEFFERSON — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team won all four quarters in an eventual 48-34 win over Greene County in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.
Connor Kemmerer scored a career-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds to lead the Trojans (5-4, 4-3). Evan Siegert scored nine points, Beckham DeSotel had seven points and 10 boards, and Teegun Edler added seven points as well.
Rafe Michaelsen had 12 points and 12 boards to lead Greene County (1-9, 0-7).
Kampman carries Clarksville girls past BCLUW
CLARKSVILLE — Paige Kampman piled up 34 points to lead Clarksville to a 64-28 win over the BCLUW girls’ basketball team in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
Kampman shot 15-of-25 from the floor, making three 3-pointers, in leading the Indians (8-2) to victory.
Addison Moeller’s double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds led BCLUW (1-6) in the team’s sixth-straight defeat. Chloe Switzer added 12 points and nine boards, and Kara Hill pitched in four points for the Comets.
East Marshall boys hand Wapsie Valley its first loss
FAIRBANK — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team overtook Class 1A No. 2 Wapsie Valley in the first half and held on for a 72-68 victory over the Warriors on Monday in North Iowa Cedar League play.
Jackson Bidwell scored a team-leading 23 points for the Mustangs (5-1, 5-1). Blake Neuroth knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, and Jaxson Boswell added nine points as East Marshall handed Wapsie Valley (8-1, 7-1) its first loss.
Briggs Boehme led the Warriors with 28 points and Braden Bantz had 21, each making five 3-pointers.
GMG girls finish strong to beat Belle Plaine
BELLE PLAINE — The GMG girls’ basketball team used a big fourth quarter to overtake Belle Plaine for a 36-27 victory in Monday’s return from the holiday break.
The Wolverines (4-5) outscored Belle Plaine 16-4 in the fourth period to turn a three-point deficit into a nine-point win over the Plainsmen (1-9).
Addison Elmore scored a team-high nine points for GMG. Macie Sanders had eight points and five steals, and Arianna Pierce also scored eight points. Makayla Pendleton chipped in five points and four blocked shots.
Jadie Dahlquist led Belle Plaine with 14 points.
Mustang girls can’t keep up with Warriors
FAIRBANK — A slow start was more than the East Marshall girls’ basketball team could overcome in a 59-29 loss to Wapsie Valley on Monday night.
The Mustangs (3-5, 1-5) trailed 12-3 after the first quarter and 27-14 by halftime of the North Iowa Cedar League loss.
Mya Gould led East Marshall with nine points, while Sydney Hull finished with eight. Ashtyn Wheater had five points and two blocked shots, and Kiela Wolf added four points and a team-high five rebounds.
Wapsie Valley (4-5, 4-6) had three double-digit scorers led by Bella Farley with 15.
West Marshall matmen finish fifth at Osage
OSAGE — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team opened the second half of the season with a fifth-place finish at the Osage Scuffle on Saturday.
The Trojans crowned a pair of champions among their seven placewinners, as Urijah Courter (120 pounds) and Jon Gonzalez (126) won back-to-back brackets.
Courter claimed a pair of pins and finished with a 5-2 decision over North Polk’s Charlie Boelman in the championship match to improve to 17-0 for the year.
Gonzalez (16-1) had one pin and three technical falls, including a 16-0 victory over Crestwood’s Mitchell Williams in the title bout.
Heavyweight Jacob Dare scored fourth place for the Trojans, moving to 16-8 on the season with a 3-2 day that included two pins. Landyn Gutierrez (17-7) got fifth at 113 after a 4-2 day.
Trojan girls win two of three at Vinton-Shellsburg
VINTON — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team went 2-1 at the Vinton-Shellsburg Quad on Saturday, falling only to the host Vikings.
The Trojans defeated West Branch (54-23) and Grinnell (36-34) but couldn’t overcome a trio of forfeits in the loss to Vinton-Shellsburg (48-36).
Two West Marshall wrestlers went 3-0 with three pins for the day as Kielly Kasal (100 pounds) and Elyse Ranson (155) both accomplished the feat. Four more Trojans — Zoey Wignall (125), Bella Sosa (170), Reese Buschbom (190) and Reagan Buschbom (235) — finished 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit.
Sophia Beebe was the only other Trojan to win a match, pinning West Branch’s Cameron Waters in 23 seconds.
