SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall girls finish off sweep of Saydel

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team secured the season sweep of Saydel, topping the Eagles 63-47 in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

The host Trojans (7-10, 5-7) jumped out to a 31-10 halftime lead and coasted to the finish line with the win. Halle Jones tallied a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals in leading West Marshall to victory.

Rachel Randall made four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points to go with five steals, while Shelby Johnston had 11 points and five assists. Nessa Mueller and Nelle Kemmerer both contributed six points.

Luella Weispfenning had game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Saydel (2-13, 0-12) in the team’s fifth-straight loss.

Eagles too much for shorthanded Trojans

STATE CENTER — A shorthanded West Marshall boys’ basketball team sustained its eighth-straight loss, a 75-28 setback against Saydel in a Heart of Iowa Conference contest here Monday.

Gage Moreno had 29 points, seven assists and seven steals to lead the visiting Eagles (10-4, 8-4) to victory. Jacob Oltmanns had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Gunner Vanderpool added 10 points.

Connor Kemmerer had 10 points, Teegun Edler nine and Ryder Gile seven to lead West Marshall (5-11, 4-8) in defeat. The Trojans remain without injured starters Beckham DeSotel and Evan Siegert.

West Marshall girls wrestle in 17-team tourney

MASON CITY — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team took 12th place at the 17-team Upper Iowa Invitational on Saturday in Mason City.

Kielly Kasal (35-9), ranked eighth at 100 pounds in Class 1A by IAwrestle, went 3-1 on the day with two pins and a technical fall. Her lone loss was a 9-4 decision to 2A No. 4 Piper Phillips of Mason City (40-6).

Reese Buschbom placed third at 190 as well for the Trojans, going 2-1 on the mat with a pair of minor decisions to improve to 33-11 on the year.

Reagan Buschbom finished fourth at 235, going 1-2 with a pin. Elyse Ranson scored sixth at 145, Sophia Beebe was seventh at 120, while Jalyn Ridout (125) and Makaylie Tarbell (170) both placed eighth.

Decorah, ranked eighth in 2A, won the tournament with 165 points, followed by No. 6 Mason City (141), Algona (131), Waverly-Shell Rock (129.5) and Dallas Center-Grimes (122.5). West Marshall totaled 59.5 points.

Storm score fifth at Ogden Invite

OGDEN — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team placed fifth out of eight teams at the Ogden Invitational on Saturday, scoring 85.5 points.

Coon Rapids-Bayard collected 183 points to take the team title, followed by Montezuma (140) and Ogden (117). The Storm finished just back of Des Moines East (92) in the standings.

SH-BCLUW had a number of placewinning finishes, led by runner-up honors for Garett Bruner (126 pounds), Beau Towne (157) and Ben Viles (175).

Bruner (15-5), ranked 11th in Class 2A by IAwrestle, went 5-1 on the day with five pins and a lone loss to Caleb Hoffman of Coon Rapids-Bayard (17-1). Towne (12-4) and Viles (5-9) both went 1-1 at their respective weights.

Third-place finishes went to Regan Eide (113), Parker Pagel (138) and Logan Kolbe (215), while Conner Teckenburg (138) took fourth and Aaron Pencil (144) placed fifth.

Mustangs shut out in own dual tourney

LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ wrestling team went 0-5 and finished in eighth place at its own Mustang Duals on Saturday.

The Mustangs sent just six wrestlers to the mats in five weight classes, posting a respectable 10-12 record in matches wrestled.

Hayden Boles scored four of those wins himself at 120 pounds, going 5-0 with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit. Jordan Meling (138) had a 5-0 day as well that included three pins and a pair of forfeits.

Alex Bautista (215) went 2-3 on the day, while Ryker Mercer (126) earned the team’s only other mat win with a pin against Gilbert.

The Mustangs fell in dual competition by scores of 68-12 to South Tama, 66-15 to North Polk, 71-12 to eventual champion Independence, 59-21 to Gilbert and 41-12 to Waterloo East.
