Wise wins for ’Cats at Bettendorf

BETTENDORF — Marshalltown senior Nicholas Wise won the 144-pound championship to lead the Bobcat boys’ wrestling team to a seventh-place finish at the 13-team Midwest Shootout on Saturday at Bettendorf High School.
Wise, ranked second in Class 3A by IAwrestle, improved to 26-0 this season with four wins on the day. He scored an 11-4 decision over No. 10 Owin Koethe of Iowa City West in the semifinals, and followed up with a third-period pin of No. 12 Henry Babgy of Urbandale for the title.
Heavyweight Ignacio Macias (13-2) took third place after a 3-1 day with three pins, losing only to sixth-ranked Kaden Stitt of Iowa City West in the semifinals, 23-11.
Nicholas Million (113) went 2-2 en route to fourth place, while Israel Garcia (126) and Colby Cross (150) earned fifth.
Fifth-ranked Iowa City West won the team title with 216.5 points, holding off Waverly-Shell Rock (207.5) and No. 3 Bettendorf (186.5). The Bobcats totaled 118.5 points.
MHS girls 11th at Ankeny
ANKENY — The Marshalltown girls’ wrestling team finished 11th out of 13 teams at the Bob Sharp Invitational, scoring 57 points on Friday.
Nevaeh Gonzales led the Bobcats with a third-place finish at 235 pounds, going 3-1 with a pair of pins. Gonzales (18-6) fell in the semifinals to Ankeny’s Aysia Moser, but claimed third place with a 5-0 decision over Central Decatur’s Keaton Simmerman.
Olivia Wise was fifth at 190 for Marshalltown, while Erandy Ibarra (106) and Ella DeMonte (155) scored sixth. Maelee Corona (105) and Shailynn Sadie (115) scored points for seventh-place finishes, as did Patricia Mateo Merida (120) and Faith Sommerlot (125) in eighth.
Class 2A No. 10 Ankeny won the tourney with 224 points, followed by No. 7 Linn-Mar (201.5) and No. 6 Mason City (169).
