Bobcats blast past Bulldogs

The Bobcats stole the ball, shared the ball and scored the ball.

The Marshalltown boys’ basketball team tallied a season-high in its 69-46 victory over Ottumwa on Friday night at the Roundhouse, getting a balanced scoring effort to stamp out the Bulldogs in Iowa Alliance Conference cross-divisional play.

Senior Kyle Smith made six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points as Marshalltown (11-7) made nine triples in what was nearly a wire-to-wire victory. Ottumwa (4-14) got its early shots to drop but couldn’t sustain its success as an 11-2 run over the last half of the first quarter put the ‘Cats up 18-10 for a lead they would never relinquish.

Jacob Hayes had 15 points, Damian Segovia had 10 points, Jamison Niehouse finished with nine points, Drake Gersema tallied six points, six assists and six steals, and Larrs Schoenfelder contributed five points in the Bobcats’ most balanced scoring performance to date.

Smith added a team-high six rebounds while Segovia had four assists. The Bobcats shot 52 percent from the field (25-for-48) and handled the Bulldogs for their fourth win in the last five games of the series.

Ty Wetrich led Ottumwa with 13 points, Jace Mitchell got 11 and Cedrick VanEngelenhoven had 10 more. The Bulldogs had won two of their last three games coming off an eight-game losing streak, but Marshalltown’s fourth-ranked defense was too much to contend with.

The Bobcats are back at home on Tuesday in their second meeting with Des Moines Lincoln this season. MHS won the first, 53-50, to start the season.

Starting at $4.38/week.
