Defensive-minded Ottumwa tops MHS

Ottumwa freshman Emma Ryder scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 61-21 victory over the Marshalltown girls’ basketball team on Friday night at the Roundhouse.

It marked the 16th-straight win for the Bulldogs (16-2), who dropped their first two games of the season but haven’t lost since.

Alli Goedken and Hayden Keith added 13 points apiece as Ottumwa forced the Bobcats (10-9) into 33 turnovers with its full-court pressure.

Amairra Johnson scored a team-leading seven points for Marshalltown, while Frankie Long had five points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Millie Heitmann also had five points to go with 10 rebounds, three steals and eight blocked shots. Long and Heitmann both rank in the top-25 statewide with 70 and 53 blocks respectively, but all the Bobcats’ rim protection couldn’t make up for a season-low offensive performance.

The Bobcats will try to break up a three-game losing streak against a Des Moines Lincoln team they beat by 14 in their first meeting earlier this season. The Railsplitters visit the Roundhouse on Tuesday.

Starting at $4.38/week.
