Hawkeye women post perfect Day 1 at NCAA Regional meet

INDIANOLA — The top-ranked University of Iowa women’s wrestling team advanced all 10 wrestlers to the semifinals at the NCAA Regional Championships on Friday. In total, the Hawkeyes secured eight pins, four of which were in less than a minute.

At 103 pounds, No. 2 Valarie Solorio opened her day with a quick pin, securing a fall in 36 seconds over Chelsea Beaver of Augsburg. She followed it up with a 13-2 technical fall against Kirsten Cortez of Carthage.

No. 4 Nyla Valencia moved into the semifinals at 110 after a technical fall over Amelia Hermanson of Augsburg.

At 117, No. 6 Brianna Gonzalez picked up a win by fall at 2:38 over Gisele Gallegos of Augsburg to advance to the semifinals.

At 124, No. 8 Cali Leng secured a fall at 2:22 against Bree Swenson of Dubuque to lock in her spot in the semifinals.

No. 4 Karlee Brooks advanced via 10-0 technical fall over Paige Haaf of Augsburg on her way to the semifinals at 131.

At 138, Lilly Luft clinched a 10-0 technical fall over Mattie Papenthein of Dubuque on her way to the semifinals.

At 145, No. 1 Reese Larramendy recorded a fall at 1:19 against Siobhan Rogers of Quincy to reach the final four.

Top-ranked Kennedy Blades advanced to the semifinals at 160 with a 10-0 victory over Grace Rinehart of Luther and another 10-0 technical fall against Eliana Callies of Upper Iowa.

Top-rated Kylie Welker delivered two quick pins at 180. She pinned Makenna Bovee of Carthage in 33 seconds, and she got a 49-fall against Tori Maxey of Cornell College.

At 207, No. 2 Katja Osteen made her way to the semifinals, needing just 13 seconds to pin Kelsey Knief of Luther and 56 seconds to pin Alannah Peterson of Buena Vista.
