SPORTS SHORTS: Belmont outscores Drake men in MVC shootout
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sam Orme had 22 points in Belmont’s 103-90 victory over Drake on Tuesday night.
Orme shot 8 for 12, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc for the Bruins (21-3, 11-2 Missouri Valley Conference). Drew Scharnowski added 19 points while going 8 of 10 and 3 of 9 from the free-throw line to go with seven rebounds. Jack Smiley shot 7 for 9, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc to finish with 18 points, while adding six assists. It was the eighth straight win for the Bruins.
The Bulldogs (12-12, 6-7) were led by Jalen Quinn, who finished with 22 points. Jaehshon Thomas added 16 points and four assists for Drake. Owen Larson also recorded 14 points and four assists.
Goebel’s triple-double triggers MVC weekly award
ST. LOUIS — For the third time this season, Northern Iowa forward Ryley Goebel was named the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league.
Goebel became the second player in MVC history and the first in UNI history to record a points-rebounds-blocks triple double with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks against Drake. The senior set the UNI single-game record and tied the Valley single-game record with her 10 blocks. She did so while shooting 58.3% (7-for-12) from the floor and 80% (4-for-5) from the free-throw line.
Goebel is just the second player in NCAA Division I this season to record a game with double-digit blocks. Goebel shot 64.7% (11-for-17) from the floor in the Panthers’ 1-1 week, which included a 10-point win at Drake. She totaled 27 points, 23 rebounds, 10 blocks and four steals on the week.
Drake’s Becker brings in another rookie honor
ST. LOUIS — Drake freshman Anna Becker added to her remarkable rookie campaign with another MVC Freshman of the Week honor, marking her third such award of the season.
Becker continued to make an impact, averaging 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for the Bulldogs while shooting 52% from the field. Becker started the week with a 13-point, 5-assist and 3-rebound night at Bradley, before matching her career high with a 22-point, 5-rebound, 3-assist and 2-steal outing against in-state rival Northern Iowa on Sunday.
Drake’s Quinn selected as MVC’s Newcomer of the Week
ST. LOUIS — For the second consecutive week, Drake’s Jalen Quinn has earned a Missouri Valley Conference weekly award. The senior was tabbed as the Newcomer of the Week after averaging 29 points per game last week.
Quinn poured in 26 points against Evansville and 32 against Bradley this past week, shooting .515 (17-for-33) from the field including .400 from beyond the arc (4-for-10). He did damage from the charity stripe as well, converting at a clip of 83 percent (20-for-24) while also averaging 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
Quinn now has 12 games of scoring 20-plus on the season, including six-straight, and three games of scoring 30-plus, which are the most by a player in the MVC this season.
