SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat matmen go 2-0 in Iowa Falls

IOWA FALLS — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team went 2-0 at the Cadet Duals Quad on Saturday, scoring wins over Forest City and host Iowa Falls-Alden.

Marshalltown improved to 15-7 in duals with a 51-25 win over Iowa Falls-Alden and 51-30 over Forest City.

Four Bobcats went 2-0 on the mat during the day, led by Dalton Zednichek in his return to the lineup. Zednichek, ranked eighth in Class 3A by IAwrestle, pinned both of his opponents at 190 pounds in a combined time of 2 minutes, 52 seconds.

Second-ranked Nicholas Wise also went 2-0 with two pins on the day, needing just 2:35 to dispose of two 144-pound opponents.

Carson Wright (165) tallied a major decision and a technical fall for his 2-0 showing, while Kieron Sharp (175) got a pin and a major decision. The Bobcats also got pins from Jamis Piscitelli (106), Derek Rivera Acosta (132), Colby Cross (150) and Ignacio Macias (285). Nicholas Million (113) tallied a technical fall.

Marshalltown returns to its own mats on Saturday, Feb. 13, as host of the Class 3A District 7 meet starting at 10 a.m. inside the Roundhouse.

Storm seventh, Mustangs 11th at Iowa Star wrestling

CONRAD — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team had two runners-up and East Marshall/Meskwaki had another at the Iowa Star Conference Tournament on Saturday at BCLUW High School.

The host Storm finished seventh in the final team standings with 86 points, while East Marshall was last out of 11 teams with 47 points.

SH-BCLUW was led by silver medal performances from Garett Bruner at 126 pounds and Beau Towne at 157, while East Marshall’s Jordan Meling got second at 138.

Bruner (36-9) had a 4-1 day that included three wins by fall and a major decision, while Towne (26-11) was 1-1.

Regan Eide (113) and Parker Pagel (132) both finished fourth for the Storm. Ignacio Iglesias (106) and Brock Collins (285) were both fifth, while Olin Hupfeld (120), Conner Teckenburg (144) and Sawyer Kane all scored sixth.

Meling also went 1-1 to place second for the Mustangs. Hayden Boles (15-20) and Alex Bautista (190) both placed fourth, while Carter Charma (126) finished fifth.

Riceville won the conference title with 193 points, followed by Lynnville-Sully (124.5) and Maquoketa Valley (120.5).

Fifth-ranked Indian Hills overwhelms MCC men

Six players scored in double figures as fifth-ranked Indian Hills hammered out a 108-61 win over the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team Saturday night at the Student Activity Center.

The Warriors (23-2, 2-0) trounced out to a 63-19 halftime lead on the way to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference victory.

Mason Costello made five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 23 points for Indian Hills. Chiang Ring added 16 points, KJ LaMonte had 13, and Chaz Watson got 12 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Tre’Von Coney came away with 14 points to lead the MCC men (8-18, 0-2). Chason St. Vil had nine points off the bench, Tristan Christopher and Tom Guma got eight points apiece, while Sean Conway, Hassan Bush and Pavle Djeric netted seven each.

Tiger women can’t keep up with Northeast

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team had a cold-shooting day in a 64-47 loss to Northeast (Neb.) on Saturday at the Student Activity Center.

Aaliyah Jones led the visiting Hawks (15-8, 10-7) with 22 points, while Aweng Akoi had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shenell Stewart had 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals in a stat-stuffing day for the Tigers (6-19, 3-14). Zaryah Snell scored 10 points off the bench, Olivia Heartwell had eight points, and Kenijae Cherry finished with six points and a game-high 12 boards.

West Marshall girls pull away from Rams

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team broke open a narrow halftime lead for a 51-40 victory over Greene County (5-15, 3-12) on Friday night.

The Trojans (9-11, 7-8) led the Heart of Iowa Conference game by one, 27-26, at halftime before outscoring the Rams 24-14 after the break.

Halle Jones made five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 25 points to lead West Marshall. Riley Randall finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Shelby Johnston chipped in with eight points. Dalaney Eldridge had one point but a team-high 10 rebounds to go with four steals and three assists.

Gile’s career-high guides Trojan boys out of slide

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team ended its 10-game losing streak against the last team it beat, topping Greene County 64-56 in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference game.

The Trojans (6-13, 5-10) scored the season sweep of the Rams (3-16, 2-13) behind a career-high 28 points from Ryder Gile. Connor Kemmerer had 12 points, while Evan Siegert and Teegun Edler added 11 points apiece. Tyson Bunting added two points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Lincoln Schwander paced Greene County with 19 points and Teagan Chisholm had another 17 points for the Rams.
