SPORTS SHORTS: Busch’s big game powers Mustangs past G-R

LE GRAND — Jackson Busch had career-highs of 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the East Marshall boys’ basketball team to an 82-64 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck in Tuesday’s North Iowa Cedar League contest.

The Mustangs (12-6, 11-6) used a 32-point third quarter to pull away for good, getting five double-digit scorers on their way to their first season sweep of G-R (6-12, 4-12) since the 2017-18 campaign.

Jackson Bidwell finished with 16 points, Jaxson Boswell scored 14 points, Dallas Miller had 12 and Blake Neuroth 11 for the Mustangs.

Roland-Story girls storm past West Marshall

STORY CITY — The Roland-Story girls’ basketball team forced West Marshall into 25 turnovers in a 63-27 Heart of Iowa Conference win for the Norsemen on Tuesday night.

Riley Johnson racked up 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead Roland-Story (15-3, 13-1) to victory. Brinley Carlson added 12 points and Emma Truesdell had 11 more.

Rachel Randall finished with nine points, five rebounds and two steals for West Marshall (8-11, 6-8). Olivia Randall had a pair of 3-pointers for six points off the bench, and Halle Jones had four points and six boards for the Trojans.

Mustang girls can’t hang with No. 8 Rebels

LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team suffered its seventh-straight loss, falling 67-30 to Class 1A No. 8 Gladbrook-Reinbeck in North Iowa Cedar League action here Tuesday.

The Mustangs (5-15, 2-15) were led by Alivia Neuroth’s 12 points and six rebounds. Sydney Hull tallied 10 points and three steals, while Ashtyn Wheater contributed five points and six boards in the team’s 15th consecutive loss to the Rebels (16-3, 14-2).

Trojans fall to Norsemen for 10th-straight loss

STORY CITY — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team fell on the road at Roland-Story on Tuesday, succumbing to the Norsemen 72-38 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Luke Thoreson had 21 points, seven steals and four assists to lead Roland-Story (13-4, 11-3), which won its third in a row. Eli Van Hove added 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Teegun Edler paced West Marshall (5-13, 4-10) with 13 points, but the team sustained its 10th-straight loss. Ryder Gile had eight points, Owen Siegert scored six points, while Connor Kemmerer had five points and a team-leading six rebounds.

Conway leads charge for MCC men’s basketball

Four players scored in double figures as the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team took down the Simpson College junior varsity squad on Monday night at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (8-17) snapped a two-game skid sparked by a career-high 21 points for sophomore guard Sean Conway. Conway shot 9-for-14, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and chipped in with three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Tre’Von Coney came away with 14 points, Tom Guma had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Trista Christopher finished with 12 points for MCC.

Colton Rasmussen scored 15 points off the bench to lead Simpson.

Wolverines handle winless Cedar Valley Christian

GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team claimed its third win in a row, beating Cedar Valley Christian 55-16 on Monday night in Garwin.

Macie Sanders led the Wolverines (10-8) with 11 points and four steals in the win. Arianna Pierce had eight points and eight rebounds, and Taelyn Sash added eight points and four steals off the bench. Skyler Murty and Rhianna Murty both chipped in with six points against the winless Huskies (0-14).

East Marshall edged out by Aplington-Parkersburg

LE GRAND — A decisive third quarter gave Aplington-Parkersburg the leg up on the East Marshall boys’ basketball team in a 75-68 Falcon victory in Monday’s North Iowa Cedar League showdown.

The Falcons (15-3) outscored East Marshall 22-14 in the third period to overcome a one-point halftime deficit and take the lead for good. Benny Waller scored a game-high 37 points, fueled by five 3-pointers, to lead A-P. Charlie Wessels added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Jackson Bidwell led East Marshall (11-6) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson Busch finished with 11 points, Jaxson Boswell got 10, while Cody Weaver, Cael Curphy and Eli Burns added nine points apiece.

UNI’s Fox claims conference wrestling honor

IRVING, Tex. — Northern Iowa’s Nick Fox has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. The honor marks the first time he has earned the conference’s weekly award in his career.

Fox’s selection comes after the Panther redshirt sophomore and 184-pounder picked up a pair of top-10 ranked victories over the weekend in UNI’s road duals at No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 21 Oklahoma. Against the Cowboys, Fox scored a 3-1 sudden victory win over No. 8 Zack Ryder, scoring the winning reversal in a tied match with 11 seconds remaining in overtime from the bottom position. Taking on 10th-ranked Brian Soldano of Oklahoma, Fox jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a takedown and four nearfall points before Soldano was forced to injury default.

Fox, an Osage native, sits at 7-1 on the season with seven consecutive victories.
