SPORTS SHORTS: Indian Hills topples Tigers in conference action
OTTUMWA — Second-ranked Indian Hills scored 52 points in the second half to pull away from the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team on Tuesday night, winning 94-71 inside the Hellyer Center.
The host Warriors (27-2, 4-0) closed out the conference title with their 19th-straight win in league play and their 26th consecutive home-court victory. Indian Hills is 17-0 at home this winter.
Five players scored in double figures for the Warriors, led by Sawyer Mayhugh with 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Taj Au-Duke tallied 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Mason Costello and KJ LaMonte added 13 points apiece.
Tom Guma came in off the bench to lead MCC (8-21, 0-3) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Tristan Christopher and Antoine Glasper had 14 points apiece, and Tre’Von Coney came away with 11 points, four assists and four steals in the team’s fourth-straight loss.
The Tigers made 14 3-pointers but got outrebounded 41-26 in their 30th consecutive loss in the series with Indian Hills.
MCC closes the regular season with a home game Saturday at 7 p.m. against Southeastern, and the two teams will meet again in the first round of the NJCAA Region XI tournament on March 4.
Pettigrew buzzer-beater lifts Valparaiso past Drake
VALPARAISO, Ind. — Rakim Chaney led Valparaiso with 17 points and JT Pettigrew hit a game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds left as the Beacons took down Drake 74-71 on Wednesday night.
Chaney went 7 of 14 from the field for the Beacons (17-13, 11-8 Missouri Valley Conference). Brody Whitaker scored 17 points while going 6 of 8 from the field.
Owen Larson led the way for the Bulldogs (12-18, 6-13) with 18 points and two steals. Jalen Quinn added 16 points and four assists for Drake. Griffen Goodbary finished with 10 points.
The loss is the eighth in a row for the Bulldogs.
Illinois State slips past Panthers
CEDAR FALLS — Boden Skunberg scored 14 points, and Johnny Kinziger secured the victory with a jump shot with 12 seconds left as Illinois State defeated Northern Iowa 71-69 on Wednesday.
Skunberg had eight rebounds for the Redbirds (19-11, 11-8 Missouri Valley Conference). Kinziger shot 5 of 13, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, to add 14 points. Chase Walker shot 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line to finish with 13 points.
Will Hornseth, Trey Campbell and Ben Schwieger all scored 13 to lead the Panthers (18-12, 10-9). Hornseth grabbed nine rebounds, and Campbell added five assists.
