SPORTS SHORTS: MCC women lock up season sweep of Southwestern
CRESTON — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team secured the season sweep of Southwestern with Wednesday’s 60-25 triumph over the host Spartans.
MCC (7-19, 4-14) held Southwestern to single digits in each of four quarters to continually pull away for the win.
Tiger sophomore center Kenijae Cherry had 12 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead all players. Shenell Stewart had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Olivia Heartwell had nine points and eight boards in the win.
MCC shot just 23.4 percent from the field (18-for-77) and 11.1 percent from 3-point range (3-for-27), but saved the day by outrebounding the Spartans 48-27.
Maddie Richter had seven points to lead Southwestern (4-22, 0-18), which suffered its seventh-straight loss. The Spartans shot 20.8 percent from the field (10-for-48) and 12 percent from 3-point land (3-for-25).
Tiger baseball team splits twinbill in Tennessee
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Marshalltown Community College baseball team split a doubleheader with Jackson State CC on Wednesday to earn its first win of the spring season.
The Tigers (1-5) used a 12-run fifth inning to score a 14-4 victory over the Green Jays in the second game of Wednesday’s twinbill. Brady Baker went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs to lead the MCC attack.
Noah Lamphier had a 2-for-3 day at the plate, also hitting a double with two runs and four RBIs.
Wyatt Hoelting earned the win on the mound, allowing just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Starter Gabe Weighner gave up just two runs over 3 2/3 innings.
Jackson State took the opening game, 10-8. MCC rallied back from a 10-4 deficit with four runs in the seventh but the comeback came up short.
Cooper Fiskewold was 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Tigers. Brodie Focke was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Jack Riley drove in three runs.
Sauyer Thompson took the loss, allowing six runs in two innings of work.
Pirates pick off MCC men in non-conference clash
TRENTON, Mo. — James Porter III scored a game-high 27 points to help North Central Missouri hold off the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team 78-70 on Tuesday night at the Ketcham Community Center.
Porter shot 9-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free-throw line to lead the Pirates (17-8) to victory. Camden Bennett added 19 points and Camden Brown had 10 more as NCMC starters accounted for 72 of the team’s 78 points.
Tristan Christopher scored a career-high 20 points, going 5-of-9 from 3-point range, to lead MCC (8-19) in defeat. Hassan Bush had 13 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots, Tom Guma got 12 points and seven boards, and Tre’Von Coney added 11 points.
The Tigers shot 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range and outrebounded the Pirates 40-35, but NCMC shot 26 free throws to MCC’s 14.
Comets outlast BGM in regular-season finale
BROOKLYN — The BCLUW boys’ basketball team closed out the regular season with a non-conference win, topping BGM 61-50 on Tuesday night.
Daniel Zoske led the Comets (10-11) with 17 points, knocking down 5-of-8 from 3-point range, to go with seven rebounds. Aiden Frank had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Adam Frank finished with 11 points.
Maddox Rhoads scored a game-high 18 points and Beau Burns added 16 points to lead BGM (6-16).
Trojans continue strong run by beating Nevada
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team won for the fourth time in five games to close out the regular season, racking up a 51-32 victory over Nevada in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference tilt.
The Trojans (10-11, 8-8) won all four quarters to send the visiting Cubs (10-12, 9-7) to their fourth-straight loss.
Halle Jones led West Marshall with 14 points, while Shelby Johnston tallied a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists. Dalaney Eldridge added 10 points and six boards, and Riley Randall made three 3-pointers for nine points.
Emilee Kelly had 16 points to pace Nevada.
Mustangs overtake Sailors to snap eight-game slide
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team rallied back for a 41-31 win over Waterloo Columbus on Tuesday night, notching the North Iowa Cedar League victory to break an eight-game losing skid.
The Mustangs (6-16, 3-15) trailed 26-22 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Sailors 19-5 to finish out the win.
Alivia Neuroth led a balanced scoring effort for East Marshall, making four 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 14 points. She also shared the team lead with nine rebounds. Sydney Hull had eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Ashtyn Wheater added eight points and five boards.
Ella Hosch had 17 points to lead Waterloo Columbus (1-17, 1-10), which lost its 16th-straight. The Sailors shot 1-of-20 from 3-point range.
