SPORTS SHORTS: Storm, Mustangs matmen earn bronze at NICL wrestling
DENVER — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team finished ninth and East Marshall tied for 10th at the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament on Saturday at Denver High School.
Both local teams were led by third-place finishers, with Garett Bruner and Beau Towne representing for the Storm and Hayden Boles standing tall for the Mustangs.
Bruner, ranked 10th in Class 2A by IAwrestle, improved to 32-8 on the year with a 3-1 day that included two pins and a technical fall. His lone loss in the 126-pound bracket came by fall in the semifinals against Jed Ebaugh of Denver (42-10).
Towne moved to 25-10 with a 3-1 day at 157 with a pin, a technical fall and a decision. His lone loss came by fall to Union’s Brock Bergemeier (36-7) in the semifinals.
Boles earned bronze for East Marshall at 120 pounds, going 2-1 to improve to 13-15 for the season. His only loss came to 1A No. 1 Ayden Bergman of Jesup (40-1) by fall in the semifinals.
Other placewinners for the Storm included Sawyer Kane (190) finishing fifth, and Regan Eide (113) and Ben Viles (175) taking eighth.
East Marshall’s Jordan Meling (28-10) came in fifth at 138 after going 2-2, winning twice by decision. His losses both came to ranked wrestlers in 2A No. 1 Gavin Landers of Denver (51-0) and 1A No. 5 Sawyer Krall of Wapsie Valley (40-7).
The Mustangs’ Deagan Madison (157) finished sixth and Max Slifer (144) came in seventh.
Panthers pour in 3-pointers to upend MCC women
The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team was unable to rack up consecutive wins for the first time since starting the season 3-0, falling 70-47 to Ellsworth on Saturday at the Student Activity Center.
The Tigers (6-18, 3-13) shot a paltry 23.4 percent (15-for-64) from the field in suffering the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference defeat. Shenell Stewart led MCC with 14 points and four steals and Olivia Heartwell had 13 points. Ariyanah Custard and Mi Amor Mcqueen pitched in with six points apiece, and Kenijae Cherry had four points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for the Tigers.
Ellsworth (5-12, 5-10) snapped a five-game losing streak behind Sofia Berraquero Beltran, who came off the bench to lead the Panthers with 23 points. She shot 8-for-10 with five 3-pointers in a career-high scoring performance. Yaiza Soriano Balaguer added 14 points as Ellsworth shot 12-of-25 from 3-point land.
