SPORTS SHORTS: Tigers overtake Southeastern for conference win
Shenell Stewart’s layup with 30 seconds left gave the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team the lead for good in a 48-45 victory over Southeastern on Wednesday night at the Student Activity Center.
The Tigers (8-20, 5-15) got the season sweep of the Blackhawks (7-21, 2-18) by cinching the win from there. Mi Amor Mcqueen followed Stewart’s layup with a steal, and Stewart made 1-of-2 free throws for a 47-45 lead.
Kenijae Cherry blocked Southeastern’s shot to force a jump ball before stealing the inbounds pass, and made the first of two free throws with 19 seconds remaining for a three-point lead.
Sophie Brown’s 3-point attempt was off the mark at the buzzer for Southeastern, sending the Blackhawks to their 10th consecutive loss.
Stewart scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to lead MCC, also piling up 19 rebounds and six steals. Ariyanah Custard added 10 points off the bench, while Jazmine Williams and Mcqueen had seven points each.
Ariana Aguilar led Southeastern with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Western Iowa Tech outlasts Tiger men
SIOUX CITY — Western Iowa Tech held off the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team for a 74-62 victory on Wednesday night.
Isaiah Lloyd scored a game-high 23 points to lead Western Iowa Tech (10-18), while Caleb Kawela added 19 points and seven rebounds. Ronald Lee and Rashard White scored 10 points apiece for the Comets, who needed only eight points from their bench.
Tre’Von Coney scored 18 points to lead MCC (8-20). Hassan Bush had 14 points, while Chason St. Vil chipped in nine points off the bench. Sean Conway contributed eight points and seven assists, and Tom Guma had eight points and six boards for the Tigers.
Redhawks rally past GMG in district showdown
TRAER — North Tama scored the final six points to beat the GMG boys’ basketball team 60-57 in Monday’s Class 1A District 6 quarterfinals on Monday night.
Kayler Morris scored a game-high 23 points to lead North Tama (14-8), and Brayton Cibula added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win. Morris made a layup to bring the Redhawks within 57-56 and then dribbled through the GMG pressure for a coast-to-coast layup to put North Tama in front for good, 58-57.
Jordan Dostal’s two free throws with 1 second left finished the scoring.
GMG (13-9) went ahead 57-54 on Easton Sash’s three-point play with 58 seconds left, but the Wolverines didn’t score again.
Rider Kupka led GMG with 18 points, while Jacoby Woodbury had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Sash finished with 11 points, and Ethan Klemesrud added 10 points and five assists.
