Bidwell bags All-State honors
East Marshall senior named to 1A third team by Iowa Print Sports Writers Association
T-R FILE PHOTO - East Marshall senior guard Jackson Bidwell (22) shoots over Baxter’s Eli Dee (1) during the Mustangs’ 71-54 victory over the Bolts in the Class 1A District 6 boys basketball final on Feb. 24 in Le Grand. Bidwell became East Marshall’s first Iowa Print Sports Writers Association All-State selection in eight seasons with his third-team honors.
DES MOINES — The best season in nearly a decade for East Marshall boys basketball came with postseason perks, too.
Mustang senior guard Jackson Bidwell was named to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State third team in a vote of statewide media and coaches on Saturday at the Casey’s Center.
Bidwell was the leading scorer for an East Marshall squad that finished the season 18-7 after a loss in the substate finals. It marked the Mustangs’ first trip to the substate round since the program posted a 22-1 season in 2017-18.
That was the last time East Marshall was recognized on the IPSWA All-State squads until Saturday.
Bidwell averaged 17.8 points per game and was among 1A’s top 3-point threats, earning him the postseason accolade from the media and coaches.
Bidwell ranked 16th in 1A with 63 3-pointers made this winter. The Mustangs led all of 1A in scoring 74.5 points per game and were tops with a 38.5 3-point shooting percentage and 75.8 free-throw shooting percentage as well. East Marshall was third in 3A with 203 made 3-pointers, and Bidwell was a big part of all of those numbers.
Bidwell was 63-of-143 (44.1 percent) from 3-point range and 55-of-63 at the free-throw line. His 87.3 free-throw shooting percentage ranked fifth in 1A among players with at least 40 attempts.
He scored a school-record 44 points in a win over Dike-New Hartford back in December.
Bidwell becomes the first Mustang honored on the IPSWA All-State squads since Zaine Leedom received second-team recognition in 2018. Zane Johnson was a third-team pick in 2017 as part of East Marshall’s back-to-back substate finalists.
Storm Lake senior Jaidyn Coon was voted as Mr. Basketball by the media and coaches after leading the Tornadoes to a 24-3 record after an overtime loss to ADM in the Class 3A semifinals.
The Creighton University recruit averaged 22 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game in his senior season at Storm Lake.
