MCC falls flat in regular-season finale

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team had a woeful shooting performance and suffered a 69-33 loss to Southeastern in Saturday’s regular-season finale at the Student Activity Center.

The Tigers (8-22, 0-4) lost their fifth game in a row heading into the NJCAA Region XI Tournament against the same team they’ll face in the first round. Already destined to square off in Wednesday’s regional opener at 7 p.m. in West Burlington, Southeastern (16-12, 2-2) secured the home game with a lopsided victory.

The Blackhawks broke a three-game losing skid by scoring the first 14 points and holding MCC to a historically low 33 points. The Tigers shot just 3-of-31 from 3-point range, shooting 9.7 percent from distance in the conference contest.

Chason St. Vil scored 10 points off the bench to lead MCC while also contributing five rebounds. Sean Conway and Hassan Bush had five points apiece and Tom Guma had nine rebounds.

Southeastern outrebounded MCC 43-19 and got scoring from nine different players. Jaleen Donley led the Blackhawks with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Trevan Krumrei and Kalvyne Eby added 12 points each.

Starting at $4.38/week.
