MVC WOMEN’S HOOPS: Goebel gets to 1K as Panthers prevail

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Northern Iowa women’s basketball team used a balanced offensive attack and a milestone performance to secure a decisive 92-73 victory over Indiana State on Thursday.

Northern Iowa (16-13, 12-7) led from the opening minutes, jumping out to an early 11-0 run while hitting its first five shots from the field. The Panthers built a 34-17 lead after the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the night.

Five Panthers scored in double figures, highlighting the team’s offensive balance. Jenna Twedt paced UNI with 21 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three-point range. Ryley Goebel and Taryn Wharton each added 15 points, Kaylynn Janes scored 13, and Elise Jaeger contributed 12.

Goebel also led the Panthers on the glass with nine rebounds, while Wharton distributed a team-high seven assists.

Goebel, a junior forward, scored her 1,000th career point on a fast-break layup during the third quarter, becoming the 32nd player in program history to reach the mark.

Indiana State fell to 9-21 overall and 5-15 in league play.

Drake 73, Illinois St. 55

DES MOINES — The Drake women’s basketball team closed its regular-season home schedule with a 73-55 victory over Illinois State on Thursday at the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs (11-18, 10-9) used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to build a 26-13 advantage.

Abbie Aalsma led all scorers with 17 points, including 15 in the first half. The former Illinois State player added four rebounds and four assists while making three 3-pointers. Brooklin Dailey added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

Anna Becker and Grace Knutson each contributed nine points. Knutson also led Drake on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds.
