Southeastern surges past MCC men in regional play

WEST BURLINGTON — Four days after getting clobbered by Southeastern, the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team traveled to Loren Walker Arena for a rematch with the Blackhawks in the NJCAA Region XI Tournament.
The Tigers nearly turned the tables in the one that mattered most.
Southeastern used a 13-2 run to close the first half en route to a 78-73 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday night in West Burlington, advancing to face Iowa Community College Athletic Conference champion Indian Hills (28-2) in Saturday’s regional championship match in Ottumwa.
MCC (8-23) used an 8-0 run to to take a 29-25 lead on Southeastern (17-12) with 6:52 left in the first half, only to see the Blackhawks break free with a 13-point surge that nearly lasted until halftime. Two Tiger free throws with 0.2 seconds left on the clock kept MCC from going scoreless for that final stretch before the break.
Prophet Fields led Southeastern with 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots, while Aric Hines added 15 points for the host Blackhawks, who led by as many as 11. Jaleel Donley and Trevan Krumrei added 13 points apiece.
Marshalltown suffered its sixth-straight loss to close the season despite a game-high 26 points from Tre’Von Coney. Hassan Bush had 15 points, Tristan Christopher tallied 14 and Tom Guma had 11 points and eight rebounds in the Tigers’ finale.
MCC played just six players in the season-ending defeat.
