SPORTS SHORTS: ISU’s Bastida named Big 12 Wrestler of the Year

AMES — Iowa State heavyweight Yonger Bastida was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Year, the league office announced prior to last weekend’s NCAA Championships. Bastida is the second Cyclone to be recognized as Big 12 Wrestler of the Year since the award was introduced in 2016, following the footsteps laid by David Carr in 2021.

Bastida, a two-time Big 12 Conference champion, finished with a 29-1 record in his senior campaign after falling to North Carolina State’s Isaac Trumble, 5-0, in the national championship match Saturday in Cleveland.

Bastida led the country with 17 technical falls this season and closes his career with a record of 104-23.
