Area alumni take on busy Iowa track weekend
A busy weekend of collegiate track and field competition across Iowa featured several area alumni competing both at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College and the Drake Relays.
The Kip Janvrin Open, held annually in Indianola, is named after Kip Janvrin, a former Simpson athlete and one of the most accomplished decathletes in U.S. history. Janvrin, a 1989 world championship team member, is widely respected for both his competitive career and decades of impact on Iowa track and field.
Among the competitors was James Johnson, a 2024 Marshalltown High School graduate who now running for Simpson. Johnson turned in a strong performance in the 1,500 meters, placing seventh overall with a time of 3 minutes, 49.89 seconds.
At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, John Moellers, a 2025 Marshalltown graduate now competing for Drake University, contributed in a pacing role during the 10,000 meters. Moellers helped set the early pace of the race before stepping off prior to the 3,000-meter mark.
