BOBCAT ROUND-UP: Valley pulls away from Bobcat boys

WEST DES MOINES — Leighton Hukee of West Des Moines Valley scored three times in the second half to turn away the Marshalltown boys’ soccer team 3-0 in Friday’s non-conference match at Valley Stadium.

The host Tigers (3-1-2) got 10 shots on goal to the Bobcats’ three. Saidi Ramadhani, Yahir Cardenas-Fuentes and Alex Corado each had assists for Valley.

It was the second-straight loss for the Bobcats (4-4-1), who break in Franklin Field on Monday with a 7 p.m. match against Perry (4-2-1).

Bobcat girls net 3 in a row

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team scored five goals in the first half on the way to its third-straight win, beating Waterloo Columbus 6-1 on Thursday.

Sophomore Claire Bonzer was the only Bobcat to score multiple goals, tallying twice on five shots on goal. Keira Halsted, Lilyia Christen, Fatima Ramirez Rosas and Kaylee Nunez.

It marked the first varsity goals for Rosas, a sophomore, and Nunez, a freshman.

Bobcat goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez finished with seven saves in net. The Bobcats, conversely, got 12 shots on net and scored on half of them.

Distance dominance for MHS boys

URBANDALE — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team finished fourth out of seven scoring teams at Urbandale’s Chuck Silvey Invitational on Thursday evening.

Marshalltown scored 52 points to trail Waukee Northwest (219), Johnston (130) and Urbandale (99.5). MHS finished ahead of Des Moines North (46), Des Moines Lincoln (29) and Des Moines Hoover (9.5).

The Bobcats dominated the distance races as Preston Johnson captured first place in the 1,600-meter run and Carter Nunn claimed the 3,200. Johnson won in a time of 4 minutes, 19.28 seconds, while Nunn won in 9:50.57.

MHS scored silver in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:39.46, while the Bobcats bagged bronze in both the 4×100 (44.23) and the 4×200 (1:35.18). The 4×400 foursome finished fifth (3:44.23) and the distance medley team took sixth (4:07.75).

Jaxson Hinkle finished fourth in both the shot put (48 feet, 5 inches) and the discus (147-3), while Jonathan Schaeffer scored eighth in the shot (41-8).

Nunn took sixth in the 800 (2:11.19), while Elicha Mboungou placed eighth in the 100 (12.15).

Bobcat girls narrowly miss sixth at Wahawk Invite

WATERLOO — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team took seventh place out of 12 teams at the Wahawk Invite on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The Bobcats finished with 40 points, just one back of Cedar Rapids Washington (41) in sixth. Cedar Falls won the team title with 170 points, followed by Urbandale (104) and Mount Vernon (80.5).

Shailynn Sadie produced the Bobcats’ top result on the track, finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.43 seconds. Grace Christensen finished fifth in the 100 (13.06); Drea Ceren scored seventh in the 1,500 (5:30.64), and Grace Whitmore was eighth in the 3,000 (12:25.00).

Marshalltown relays finished fifth in the 4×100 (52.80) and the 4×800 (11.:01.34), while the 4×200 was sixth (1:56.24) and the distance medley was sixth (5:10.72).

Off the track, Olivia Wise led the Bobcats by finishing fourth in the discus (78 feet, 9 inches) and sixth in the shot put (30-5). Avery Buschbom took seventh in the discus (72-0 1/2), while Anela Villareal was seventh in the high jump (4-10).

The Bobcats host their only home meet of the spring with Monday’s Marshalltown Relays starting at 4:30 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.

Ames edges MHS boys, 2-1

AMES — Ames scored the only goal of the second half to lead the Little Cyclones past the Marshalltown boys’ soccer team for a 2-1 win in Thursday’s Iowa Alliance Conference clash.

Gavin Murphy scored from 30 yards out in the 52nd minute to lift the Little Cyclones to victory. Marshalltown (4-3-1) played the final 9 minutes, 12 seconds with a man advantage after a red card was issued to Dylan Vargas of Ames, but the Bobcats couldn’t cash in.

Samuel Sadow scored the icebreaker for Ames (3-0-2), capitalizing on a steal by Matthias Roettger in the ninth minute.

Marshalltown drew even when Andres Ordaz was fouled just beyond the box and Aaron Ordaz Zambrano banged home the free kick in the 19th minute.

MHS goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez made 11 saves in the loss.
