ANKENY — The Marshalltown girls’ golf team made a strong showing in its first 18-hole event of the spring season, scoring second place at Thursday’s Toni Dickey Hawkette Invite at Otter Creek Golf Course.

Marshalltown finished in with a 354 team total, trailing only Southeast Polk’s 335 in the 12-team tournament. Clear Lake gave chase in third place at 359.

The Bobcats had a pair of medalists in Morgan Hilderbrand and Harper Wilson, both of whom shot rounds of 79 to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

“We’re still feeling out the competition statewide this year, but it was great for us to be competitive against some of the perennial powers in Central Iowa,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “We had two fantastic rounds at the top of the lineup.

“Harper put on a clinic with the driver and did an awesome job on and around the greens with her chipping and putting. Morgan put together a great back nine and finished with four straight pars to keep it under 80 for the first time in her career.”

Emma Clawson came in with a 92 and both Hanna Osgood and Avery Polley posted 104 to account for the Bobcats’ final scoring round. Kamryn Price shot 114 for MHS as well.

“The course was completely waterlogged, which made it play super-long, but I thought the girls did a great job adjusting to the conditions,” Johnson said. “Thankfully we avoided the wind that Otter Creek usually is known for and were able to take advantage of it on some of the tougher holes on the course.”

Des Moines East’s Saleah Vivanh Vong was the meet medalist with an even-par round of 71 that was highlighted by four birdies. Southeast Polk’s Anna Wahman (75) and Kate Wahman (79) scored the silver and bronze medals.

Next up for the Bobcats is West Des Moines Valley’s Lamson Invite on Monday at 10 a.m. at Willow Creek Golf Course.
