Christensen leads girls in opener at Waukee

WAUKEE — Returning state qualifier Grace Christensen won the 100-meter dash to lead the Marshalltown girls’ track and field team at the Waukee Invite on Tuesday at Timberline Middle School.

Christensen won the 100 in 12.97 seconds to claim the Bobcats’ top finish for the day. No team scores were reported for the meet.

Fellow sophomore Leah Graves claimed second place in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 1 1/4 inches. Olivia Wise, also a sophomore, scored second in the shot put (30-2) and third in the discus (87-5) in the Bobcats’ season-opening meet.

Other top individual performances for MHS included Christensen’s sixth-place finish in the 200 (27.80). Chloe Hoogensen (eighth, 19.30) and Geneva Spitzli (ninth, 19.40) clocked in for the 100 hurdles, as did Drea Ceren (eighth, 2:50.91) and Mattea Wright (10th, 2:56.82) in the 800. Nevaeh Gonzales was ninth in the discus (67-9) and 10th in the shot put (21-3), while Shailynn Sadie was eighth in the long jump (12-7).

Two Bobcat relays placed fourth: the 4×200 team of Bailey Garland, Erandy Ibarra Madrigal, Leia Hernandez and Sadie combined on a time of 1:58.38, and the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Spitzli, Hoogensen, Brooklynn Hazen and Lorelai Villareal teamed up to go 1:21.32.
