Hawkeyes make big splash in portal
IOWA CITY — The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball program has secured multiple additions from the NCAA transfer portal, highlighted by commitments from center Andrew McKeever and guard Ty’Reek Coleman.
McKeever, a 7-foot-3 center from Saint Mary’s, announced his commitment on Saturday via his Instagram account. The Livermore, California, native averaged 8.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 season, providing a significant interior presence for a Hawkeyes team that lacked size during its NCAA Tournament run.
His addition came one day after Coleman, a guard from Illinois State, also committed to Iowa, giving coach Ben McCollum two key portal additions in consecutive days.
According to 247Sports, both McKeever and Coleman were among Iowa’s top transfer targets, with the program “landing two big additions” early in the portal cycle.
McKeever addresses a major roster need at center following Iowa’s Elite Eight loss, where the Hawkeyes struggled against size in the paint. His rebounding production and length are expected to bolster the frontcourt, particularly after forward Alvaro Folgueiras entered the portal.
Coleman, meanwhile, fills a need in the backcourt, giving Iowa an experienced perimeter option as it reshapes its guard rotation following offseason departures. He averaged 10 points per game in his rookie season at Illinois State.
The pair represent the first confirmed transfer additions of the spring window for Iowa, which opened April 7. Their commitments signal an aggressive start to roster rebuilding after making the Hawkeyes’ deepest NCAA Tournament run since 1999.
Both players are expected to play significant roles in the 2026-27 season as Iowa looks to build on its Elite Eight appearance.
