IOWA CITY — Iowa forward Alvaro Folgueiras announced Friday that he will enter the NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal after one season with the Hawkeyes.

Folgueiras revealed the decision in a social media post, writing, “Forever grateful, Hawkeye Nation!” according to reports from KCRG and other outlets.

The 6-foot-10 junior forward averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 20.7 minutes per game during the 2025-26 season. He appeared in a reserve role for Iowa but became a key contributor during the team’s NCAA Tournament run.

Folgueiras delivered one of the Hawkeyes’ most memorable moments of the season in the NCAA Tournament. In the Round of 32, he hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds of Iowa’s 73-72 upset of top-seeded Florida, sending the program to its first Sweet 16 since 1999.

He continued his strong postseason play in the Sweet 16, scoring 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting in a win over Nebraska.

Before transferring to Iowa, Folgueiras played two seasons at Robert Morris. As a sophomore in the 2024-25 season, he averaged about 14 points and nine rebounds per game while also contributing more than three assists per contest. That performance earned him Horizon League Player of the Year honors and first-team All-Horizon League recognition.

A native of Málaga, Spain, Folgueiras developed in the youth system of Unicaja Málaga before moving to the United States to attend DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida. He later signed with Robert Morris, where he quickly emerged as one of the Horizon League’s top players.

The NCAA transfer portal for men’s basketball opened April 7 and runs through April 21. Folgueiras becomes the first Iowa player to enter the portal during the current window, according to reports.

His departure removes an experienced frontcourt option from the Hawkeyes roster after a season in which he provided scoring, playmaking and a key postseason highlight.

Starting at $4.38/week.
