MHS boys shut out Alliance foes

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE - Marshalltown junior Jacob Seberger sends a forehand smash back to his Ottumwa counterpart during No. 5 singles play in Tuesday’s Iowa Alliance Conference double dual at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

As the calendar counts down toward divisional play, the Marshalltown boys’ tennis team continues to wind up in preparation for it.

The Bobcats blasted through a pair of Iowa Alliance Conference foes on Tuesday at the Marshalltown Court Complex, clocking Des Moines Hoover and Ottumwa by matching 11-0 results.

Marshalltown (4-0) surrendered no sets and just a few games while going full-send regardless of the scenario.

“Similar to our Des Moines East match the other day, we talked earlier about playing today at our level — not at anybody else’s level,” said MHS head coach James Christensen. “So go for those first serves. Go for the big returns, no matter if you need to or not. We could patty-cake the ball in today, but our guys needed to keep that level up because we know we have a rated team in Waverly-Shell Rock coming here on Friday.”

The Bobcats go to Des Moines North on Thursday before hosting the Class 1A No. 5 Go-Hawks on Friday in a chance to find out where they stand up at this point in the season.

Swinging freely against teams like Hoover and Ottumwa was the only way to make a match out of the competition.

Marshalltown gave up just seven games overall against Hoover, while Ottumwa got the Bobcats for 19 more in the nightcap. A stern challenge from Ottumwa’s No. 1 singles player Marcus Storto made MHS senior Caleb Rasmussen rise to the occasion, and he did when it seemed a deciding third set might be on the table.

Trailing 4-3, Rasmussen rallied with three-straight games to finish off Storto to remain unbeaten in singles play so far this season.

Elliot Kodis and Evan Roush got the best threat from a doubles opponent on Tuesday, fighting off Ottumwa’s Mav Rath and Josh Lee, 6-3, 6-1.

It was all straight-set victories for MHS on the day, starting with Rasmussen at No. 1 singles, Kodis at No. 2, Roush at No. 3, followed by Kyle Smith, Jacob Seberger and Parker Christen. Kodis didn’t relinquish a game in his wins over Justin Burrage of Hoover and Carter Burton of Ottumwa, winning both matches 6-0, 6-0.

MHS mixed up its top two doubles combinations and still eased through the day while gaining some added perspective as teams like Waverly-Shell Rock and the foes from the Iowa Alliance Conference’s North Division loom in the future.

“I think that was successful to try a couple different things out,” Christensen said. “We’re still kind of up in the air as to what we’ll do moving forward once we enter the true conference portion of our schedule, but today we got to check some stuff out. We’ll continue to refine those doubles combinations.”

At No. 1 doubles, Rasmussen and Roush rolled through Caden Lemons and Logan Hagler of North, 6-0, 6-2, while Kodis and Smith scored a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Burrage and Michael Dang.

Against Ottumwa, it was Rasmussen and Smith notching a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Storto and Burton at No. 1, while Kodis and Roush held off Rath and Lee.

The Nos. 3-5 doubles teams of Seberger and Christen, Aaron Hunter and Ben Wirin, and Micah Goodwin and Ronan Ham handled their opponents, allowing only four games combined over their six total contests.

“We have somewhere between four or five matches in a five-day span, and I think the guys relish it, really,” Christensen said. “I mean, we’re kind of sick of playing against each other at this point. We’ve tried about as many different combinations as we can during practice — we need some fresh people to play against and once we get into the heart of our schedule like this, we get a lot of them in a row. So it’s great to have the competition, and I think the boys are ready for a test.”
