MHS rips into Railsplitters

Monday’s victory over Southeast Polk was one of the more contentious versions of an 11-0 outcome in high school boys tennis.

Tuesday’s 11-0 triumph of Des Moines Lincoln was not the same thing.

The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team improved to 8-0 by rocking the Railsplitters from start to finish, celebrating Senior Day with varsity wins for all seven seniors on the Bobcats’ roster.

Most of Marshalltown’s regular singles lineup sat during doubles play to give the team’s seniors a chance to compete in a low-pressure situation. Each of them delivered, much to head coach James Christensen’s satisfaction.

“It was really fun to watch the seniors play,” he said. “Gavin (Staker) and Talon (Halsted) at No. 5 doubles, they were awesome. There are a lot of teams in our conference where those guys are singles players or at least doubles players consistently. The same with Max (Scheier) and some of the other guys.

“On our team, they run JV (junior varsity) and they’ve never complained. They work hard and it was great to get them a good opportunity to get some wins tonight.”

Des Moines Lincoln (1-9) was fresh off its first dual meet victory a night earlier, but the Railsplitters couldn’t hang with MHS on this evening. Lincoln notched a number of games during doubles play, but Marshalltown allowed just five games with its featured singles roster.

A night after getting pushed as far as possible by a feisty Southeast Polk squad, Tuesday had an entirely different feel.

“I just wanted them to come out of tonight having good confidence about their game,” Christensen said. “Be ready to take a couple days of practice to clean up a couple things, rest some shoulders and knees, and be ready to go on Friday because that’s going to be a big step up in competition for us.”

Marshalltown hosts a quadrangular meet that welcomes Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Mason City and West Des Moines Valley to the Marshalltown Court Complex. The Bobcats will take on Jefferson at 10 a.m. and Valley at approximately 1:30 p.m. MHS will close the regular season at Mason City on May 12 in a dual that has potential for enormous Iowa Alliance Conference championship implications.

On Tuesday, Halsted got his first varsity tennis victory in teaming with Staker for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 doubles over Paul Thomas and Hung Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2. It was Staker’s first varsity win this season and second overall.

Marshalltown’s No. 4 doubles tandem of Ronan Ham, a senior, and Micah Goodwin, a junior, scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dominic Carlino and Viko Rathsavongsy, while the No. 3 doubles team of Scheier and Aaron Hunter, a junior, swept Atzel DeAvila-Lopez and Caden Ho, 6-4, 6-2.

The Bobcats’ Rasmussen brothers — Caleb and Zachary — teamed up for the second time this season and stormed to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Michael Nhan and Jaxson Barry at No. 1 doubles, while seniors Kyle Smith and Jacob Hayes paired up for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Adam Miller and Daniel Klier at No. 2.

Smith turned around to get one of Marshalltown’s three 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in singles play, continuing the momentum gained in Monday’s three-set, come-from-behind against Southeast Polk. Elliot Kodis, the junior at No. 2 singles, did the same.

“This was mainly a get-right match after yesterday,” Christensen said. “The guys that struggled at times yesterday came out and really dominated. Elliot and Kyle were able to come out of there with a couple 6-0, 6-0s, they kept that level and played the entire time. There wasn’t a drop like yesterday.

“They all really played at a high level the entire time.”

Juniors Evan Roush, Jacob Seberger and Parker Christen closed out the singles sweep for Marshalltown.
