Mustang golfers split season-opener against Union
The East Marshall boys’ golf team started its season with a 20-stroke victory over Union Community on Thursday at Wandering Creek Golf Course, beating the Knights 155-175.
The start of the meet was moved up to avoid as much rain as it could, and the Mustangs made the most of the opportunity. East Marshall senior Cody Weaver claimed meet medalist honors with a 1-under-par round of 35, and teammate Wyatt Stalzer was the runner-up with a 2-over 38. Weaver had one birdie and eight pars in his medalist round.
Rylan Weaver carded a 40 and Jackson Bidwell finished out with a 42 to round out the Mustangs’ scoring.
Nash Schmitz led Union with a 39.
On the girls’ side, the visiting Knights claimed the win, 218-249, led by the top four individual scorers of the meet. Mia Michael led Union with a 50 and Melanie Yuska added a 54 to give the Knights a sweep of the hardware.
East Marshall was led by Hayliee Versteegh with a 59. Mya Gould (60), Abigail Hendricks (63) and Charlee Gallentine (67) rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs.
