Polar Bears plundered by Bobcat boys tennis, 11-0

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ tennis team gained first-time varsity experience for two players in an 11-0 romp over Des Moines North on Thursday in Iowa Alliance Conference action at Birdland Sports Park.

The Bobcats breezed to 4-0 on the season with their third-straight 11-0 shutout victory, knocking out North with straight-set wins in all but one match.

The only three-set contest came at No. 2 doubles, where brothers Caleb and Zach Rasmussen met with North’s Grady Garcia and James Colbert. The Rasmussen brothers took a set to get their bearings before posting a 4-6, 6-0, (10-4) triumph in the varsity tennis debut for Zach, a freshman.

Jacob Hayes teamed up with fellow senior Kyle Smith for his first varsity start, pairing up for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Bobcats blew through the Polar Bears (1-2) across the rest of the contest, highlighted by 6-0, 6-0 singles victories for Caleb Rasmussen at No. 1 and Parker Christen at No. 6.

The competition picks up considerably for Marshalltown on Friday as the Bobcats host Class 1A No. 5 Waverly-Shell Rock in a 4 p.m. dual at the Marshalltown Court Complex.
