SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls fall to Newton in soccer opener
NEWTON — Newton scored three goals in the second half to rally past the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team in Thursday’s season-opening match for 3-2 victory at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
Aliviah Ross scored two goals and Adalynn Groves got another for the host Cardinals, who outshot the Bobcats 14-6 on the night.
Of Marshalltown’s five shots on goal, however, two of them got past Newton goalkeeper Addyson Cibula. The Bobcats just couldn’t create enough chances to take advantage of that high shooting percentage.
Keira Halsted and Claire Bonzer both scored goals for the Bobcats, while junior goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez made 13 saves in net for MHS.
The Bobcat girls are back in action Monday with a road match against Des Moines Roosevelt at Mediacom Stadium.
Central Iowa United girls get past Greene County, 2-0

Neither Rosalei Reed nor Landrey Harris faced a shot on goal in net for Central Iowa United, which returns to play on Monday at Nevada.
