SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats tracksters score medals at Jim Duncan Invite
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both came away with a placewinner from the Jim Duncan Invitational on a cold and windy Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Bobcat sophomore Grace Christensen sprinted to fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.89 seconds. Pella Christian junior Rachel Kacmarynski scored first place in a time of 12.56, while Christensen was just two-hundredths out of third place.
The Marshalltown quartet of Bailey Garland, Erandy Ibarra Madrigal, Leia Hernandez and Christensen captured 11th place in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:52.82.
The Bobcats’ 4×800 foursome of Anessa Morrison, Drea Ceren, Mallory Meyeraan and Mattea Wright took 17th in 11:13.32, while the distance medley relay team of Shailynn Sadie, Leah Graves, Faith Sommerlot and Wright placed 19th in 5:07.59.
On the boys’ side, Carter Nunn captured the Bobcats’ top result by finishing seventh in the 3,200 with a time of 9:37.96.
Fellow senior Jaxson Hinkle just missed the medal stand in the shot put, placing ninth with a heave of 49 feet, 4 1/4 inches, and Aiden Smitherman was 11th in the 400 hurdles (59.23).
The top Bobcat relay of the day was the 4×100 foursome of Fernando Garcia, Jamison Niehouse, Smitherman and Evan Anderson, which took 12th in 46.35. The 4×400 relay team of Isacc Ceniceros, Zak Wilder, Declan Greene and Carson Wright finished 14th in 3:40.84.
Marshalltown’s foursome of Michael Downs, Ceniceros, Myles Goldman and Kade Randall came away with 18th place in the 4×800 (8:42.15).
Reivers take two from MCC softball squad
COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Western softball team scored a sweep of Marshalltown Community College on Friday, topping the Tigers 19-1 and 19-3 in a pair of run rule-shortened games.
MCC’s three hits in the opener came from Morgan Williams, Brianna True and Amira Cowell (double). Savanah Gutierrez drove in Williams with the Tigers’ lone run.
Tyla Pita-Kani took the loss in the pitcher’s circle for MCC, surrendering 13 runs (nine earned) on nine hits over two innings. The host Reivers hit a pair of home runs.
Iowa Western hit three more homers in the nightcap, which Marshalltown led briefly after scoring twice in the top of the first inning.
Gutierrez went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run to lead MCC, while Kiara Brannon, Shalei Morn and Noreli Rocha added singles.
Starting pitcher Riley Imhoff took the loss, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) over 3 1/3 innings. Iowa Western (32-5, 5-2) hit three more homers in the second game.
MCC (4-14, 0-6) plays at home Monday in a doubleheader at Southwestern.
MHS boys draw even at Lincoln, 2-2
DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team settled for its first tie of the season, finishing all square against host Des Moines Lincoln on Friday night, 2-2.
The Bobcats (3-2-1) led 2-1 at the half but gave up the only goal after the intermission as Lincoln (2-1-1) rallied for the tie.
Junior midfielder Andres Ordaz scored both goals for Marshalltown, with Aaron Ordaz Zambrano assisting on both tallies.
MHS goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez saved 16 shots in net, while Lincoln’s David Davalos finished with five saves.
The Bobcats host Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Trojan boys tumble at Wright County
BELMOND — The Central Iowa United boys’ soccer squad came up empty in a 4-0 loss to Wright County on Friday evening.
Jack Seyller, Andrew Seyller and Reagan Peters registered the only shots on goal for the visiting Trojans (1-4-0). Goalkeeper Landon Vaughn made 12 saves in net for the Trojans, while Zackary Van Wyk-Jutting got one stop in three minutes in net.
Angel Cortes and Jorge Luis Guzman both had two goals for Wright County (4-0-1).
Mustangs, Trojans flock to Ram Early Bird
JEFFERSON — The East Marshall boys’ track and field team had a pair of runner-up relays in its trip to the Ram Early Bird on Friday at Greene County High School.
The Mustangs’ foursome of Blake Neuroth, Kaden Good, Eli Burns and Cael Curphy scored silver in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1 minute, 34.59 seconds. The finishing quartet of Kaden Grant, Wyatt Anderson and Gavin Gaschler took second in 3:37.77 in the 4×400.
Nathan Frye finished fourth by clearing 5 feet, 9 inches in the high jump, while Curphy was ninth at 5-7. Good got fourth in the 400 (54.86).
West Marshall had five third-place finishes on the day. Individually, Erick Rosas Canchola got bronze in the 400 hurdles (58.73); Todd Peters was third in the discus (139 feet) and Ryder Gile was third in the high jump (5-11).
The sprint medley relay team of Turner DeRossett, Calvin Streeter, Kinnick Geers and Evan Siegert took third in 1:38.74, while the 4×200 foursome of Geers, Streeter, Canchola and DeRossett ran to third in 1:35.47.
The Trojans’ 4×100 relay team of Geers, Streeter, Siegert and DeRossett was fifth in 45.44; while Canchola, Maddox Dehner, Quintin Weingartz and DeRossett finished fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:12.08).
Comet girls, Spartan boys win BCLUW golf meets
The BCLUW girls and Grundy Center boys claimed the team titles at golf meets hosted by the Comets on Friday at a pair of area courses.
The Comet girls shot a 192 to beat East Marshall (256), while Colfax-Mingo didn’t field a full scoring team, at Union Hills Golf Course in Union. BCLUW carded the two lowest scores and four of the best five to take the day.
Leah McEwen won medalist honors with a 7-over-par round of 42, while fellow Comet Gracie Andrews was second with a 44. Ainsley Geelhart (52) and Jaya Beeghly (54) rounded out the BCLUW scoring.
East Marshall’s scoring rounds came from Hayliee Versteegh (57), Mya Gould (62), Charlee Gallentine (68) and Tori Mauseth (69).
In a battle between two of Class 2A’s defending state qualifiers, Grundy Center outdueled East Marshall to finish atop a four-team boys field at Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad, 145-154.
Stanford commit Judd Jirovsky led Grundy Center with a medalist-round of 3-under 35, while Jaxon Kiewiet was runner-up with a 35.
East Marshall had the next three best scores with Cody Weaver (36), Jackson Bidwell (36) and Wyatt Stalzer (38), and 42s from Rylan Weaver, Austin Crandon and Jaxson Boswell shared the final counting score for the Mustangs.
BCLUW totaled 164 for third place, led by Zaden Eggers in seventh with a 39. Nate Bishop and Beau Towne both shot 40, while 45s from Aiden Frank and Eathan Petermeier tallied the final counting round.
Colfax-Mingo shot 192 for fourth place in the meet.
