SPORTS SHORTS: Comet golfers claim most of the medals
CONRAD — The BCLUW golf teams won both sides of an Iowa Star Conference triangular on Thursday at Oakwood Golf course.
In the boys’ meet, BCLUW hoarded all of the medals. The Comets won the team competition with a 163 score, finishing ahead of Clarksville (186) and GMG (219).
Zaden Eggers shot a 3-over-par 38 for medalist honors, and fellow Comet Adam Frank claimed runner-up with a 40. Beau Towne finished out with a 41 and Aiden Frank added a 44 for BCLUW’s counting scores.
Clarksville was led by Gavin Jacobs with a 41.
GMG got a fifth-place finish from Easton Runner with his team-leading 44. Jacob Beaderstadt (56), Domonick Harding (58) and Easton Brown (61) completed the Wolverines’ team scoring.
For the girls, BCLUW shot a 206 to beat GMG (293) in the team race. Clarksville didn’t have four golfers, but did claim medalist Capri Clark and her round of 49.
BCLUW’s Gracie Andrews lost a cardback to settle for runner-up with her 49. Teammates Jaya Beeghly (50), Leah McEwen (51) and Ainsley Geerhart (56) closed out the Comets’ scoring.
GMG was led by Violet Jackson with a 63. Kenzie Bartel (71), Piper Jones (78) and Ryann Bessman (81) added to the Wolverines’ final score.
Wheater leads Mustang girls in home invite
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ track and field team finished eighth out of 14 participating teams at its own invitational on Thursday, while BCLUW came away in 11th.
The host Mustangs had 42 points and BCLUW tallied 21. Bondurant-Farrar won with 129 points, followed by Newton (119) and Oskaloosa (78).
East Marshall was led by Ashtyn Wheater, who claimed first place in the shot put with a heave of 38 feet 1 3/4 inches, and third in the discus with a distance of 106-5.
The Mustangs’ distance medley relay team took second in 4:37.58. Sydney Hull scored third in the 1,500 (5:25.20), while Marisa Cahalan claimed fourth in the high jump (5 feet). The sprint medley team placed sixth (2:00.95).
BCLUW was led by senior thrower Grace Farnsworth, who was second in the shot put (35-6 1/2) and eighth in the discus (92-7). Cambria Wayman finished fifth in the long jump (14-10).
On the track, Chloe Switzer claimed fifth in the 1,500 (5:45.21) and eighth in the 3,000 (12:50.03).
Eldridge’s silver leads charge for Trojan girls
DIKE — The West Marshall girls’ track and field team took seventh place out of 16 scoring teams at Dike-New Hartford’s Lady Wolverine Invite on Thursday night.
The Trojans scored 52 points to finish just back of Wapsie Valley (55.5) in fifth and Hudson (53) in sixth. Host Dike-New Hartford won with 105 points, followed by Webster City (83) and AGWSR (74).
Dalaney Eldridge tallied West Marshall’s best finish, placing second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1 minute, 2.69 seconds.
Addie Thompson took third in both the 1,500 (5:19.91) and the 3,000 (11:46.46), and the Trojan quartet of Ella Randall, Summer Kurth, Eldridge and Zoey Wignall bagged bronze in the 4×800 (10:31.98).
West Marshall’s foursome of Avery Buck, Elizabeth Edler, Alayna Frederick and Thompson took fourth in the distance medley (4:45.55), while Buck was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.66). Cailyn Brown scored sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.03), while Randall was sixth in the 1,500 (5:31.16).
The Trojans’ shuttle hurdley relay team of Buck, Evalyn Clark, Sophia Beebe and Brown booked fifth in 1:29.65.
Trojans’ Geers, Comets’ Zoske score silver at Hudson
HUDSON — The West Marshall boys’ track and field team took eighth and BCLUW was 12th at the Hudson Relays on Thursday evening.
West Marshall scored 44 points while BCLUW tallied 24. Denver won the 17-team meet with 125.5 points, followed by Grundy Center (96) and Aplington-Parkersburg (92).
The Trojans were led by a runner-up finish from Kinnick Geers in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.58 seconds. Ryder Gile got third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches, while Erick Rosas Canchola claimed fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:00.88).
Evan Siegert took fifth in the 400 (52.04), while Todd Peters was fifth in the discus (134-6). The Trojans’ sprint medley squad was ffith in 1:38.79.
BCLUW was led by Daniel Zoske’s second-place finish in the shot put (47-3 1/2). Vance Hoyt scored fourth in the long jump (18-10 1/4), and the Comets’ distance medley team was fourth in 4:02.97. BCLUW’s 4×800 relay team placed fifth in 9:36.68.
