SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs’ hurdles records fall at South Hardin Co-Ed
ELDORA — The East Marshall boys’ track and field team set a pair of school records at the South Hardin Co-Ed on Friday night in Eldora.
Eli Burns broke the Mustangs’ record in winning the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.34 seconds, while Blake Neuroth established the school’s new mark in the 400 hurdles with a second-place time of 56.23.
East Marshall had four event victories in all, including Cael Curphy’s triumph in the 400 (52.73). The Mustang foursome of Neuroth, Kaden Grant, Burns and Curphy collected gold in the 4×400-meter relay (3:31.39), and the sprint medley crew of Neuroth, Kaden Good, Burns and Curphy won as well (1:38.96).
Austin Pansegrau got second in the 1,600 (5:18.15), as did the 4×200 team of Neuroth, Grant, Trent Criswell and Good (1:36.31).
BCLUW’s boys were led in field events as Vance Hoyt was second in the long jump (19 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and Daniel Zoske was second in the shot put (44-7 1/4). Zoske was also third in the discus (129-6).
Olin Hupfeld finished fourth in the 3,200 for the Comets in 11:47.23. BCLUW earned fourth in the 4×100 with Eathan Petermeier, Owen Case, Ethan Shadlow and Hoyt (47.46), the sprint medley with Petermeier, Hoyt, Shadlow and Tommy Hinderhofer (1:41.30), and the distance medley team of Shadlow, Hoyt, Hinderhofer and Brayden Catherwood (3:58.67).
On the girls’ side, BCLUW got a pair of event victories as Grace Farnsworth won the shot put (35-6 3/4) and the discus (100-5 1/2).
The Comets claimed second in the 4×100, with Cambria Wayman, Lucy Walters, Layla Follett and Brinna Benson running 55.83. The same quartet in a different order (Benson, Walters, Follett, Wayman) took second in the sprint medley in 2:01.42.
The BCLUW 4×800 foursome of Follett, Kennedy Davis, Elise Engle and Chloe Switzer earned third (11:28.79), while the distance medley relay team of Benson, Follett, Wayman and Switzer was fourth in 4:56.70.
No team scores were reported from the meet.
Weaver medals, Mustangs edged by Columbus
WATERLOO — East Marshall senior Cody Weaver claimed medalist honors as the Mustang boys’ golf squad was edged out at the Waterloo Columbus Quad on Friday at South Hills Golf Course.
Weaver won with a 2-under-par round of 34, while Rylan Weaver claimed fourth place after shooting a 1-over 37.
All four scoring Waterloo Columbus golfers shot 36 or 37 as the Sailers claimed the team title with a 147. East Marshall finished in with a 153, Hudson shot 163 and Jesup closed the field at 172.
East Marshall also got counting rounds of 40 from Jackson Bidwell and 42s from both Jaxson Boswell and Wyatt Stalzer.
Bonzer’s hat trick helps Bobcat girls beat winless Wahawks
WATERLOO — Claire Bonzer scored three goals and the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team snapped a two-game skid with a 4-3 win over Waterloo West on Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
Bonzer’s three goals came on 15 shots, but all three shots inside the frame found the back of the net. Marshalltown totaled 33 shots to Waterloo West’s nine, but the Bobcats (4-4) escaped with the win.
Katie Gomez Reyes got the other goal for MHS, while goalkeeper Sophia Valdez Chavez finished with 13 saves.
Lilian Galloway scored two goals and Graysyn Downing got the other for the winless Wahawks (0-6).
MHS girls score handful of points at Newton Co-Ed
NEWTON — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team took four points from the Newton Cardinal Co-Ed Invite on Thursday, finishing 12th out of 14 teams. Host Newton won with 106.5 points, followed by Pella (104) and Clear Creek-Amana (75).
The Bobcats scored with a pair of seventh-place finishes as Anela Villareal cleared 4 feet, 6 inches in the high jump and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Chloe Hoogensen, Geneva Spitzli, Brooklynn Hazen and Kendall Brummel timed in at 1 minute, 18.02 seconds.
Brummell also claimed ninth in the 400 hurdles (1:17.53), while the distance medley relay team of Sierra Wolf, Sophia Richardson, Colette Niles and Ashlyn Rodriguez Escamilla was 11th in 5:21.30.
