SPORTS SHORTS: Nunn, Goldman guide Bobcat boys at Mason City meet

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys’ track and field team totaled 113 points on its way to fifth place at the Dave Long Relays hosted by Mason City on Monday night.

The host Riverhawks claimed the team title with 173.3 points, followed by Forest City (138), Decorah (121), Algona (120) and the Bobcats. MHS finished ahead of Waterloo East (108.3), Fort Dodge (99.3) and Waterloo East (42) in the annual event.

Marshalltown made off with a pair of event victories on the night. Carter Nunn claimed first place in the 1,600-meter run with his time of 4 minutes, 50.12 seconds, with teammate Myles Goldman in third (5:01.92).

Both were a part of the other Bobcat triumph as well, joining Isacc Ceniceros and Kade Randall for the win in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:46.12.

On the field, Jaxson Hinkle scored silver with his shot put of 52 feet, 7 inches. Hinkle also placed fifth in the discus (143-9).

Randall, who anchored the 4×800, added bronze in the open 800 with a time of 2:14.34, while teammate Michael Downs finished fifth in 2:15.69. Ceniceros was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.66.

A pair of Marshalltown relays also picked up fourth-place finishes. Elicha Mboungou, Declan Greene, Evan Anderson and Zak Wilder went 1:38.24 for fourth in the 4×200, while Fernando Garcia, Carson Daters, John Schoenfelder and Jordan Haynes clocked in at 1:16.37 in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Trojan trackers compete at PCM Co-Ed

MONROE — The West Marshall girls’ track and field team finished third and the Trojan boys took fourth at the PCM Co-Ed on Monday night.

The Trojan girls scored 94 points to trail only Ballard (163) and host PCM (143) in the eight-team meet. West Marshall earned a pair of event victories as Dalaney Eldridge claimed the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 2.05 seconds, and Addie Thompson won the 3,000 in 11:21.51.

Two West Marshall relay teams finished with silver as the shuttle hurdle relay team of Avery Buck, Evalyn Clark, Sophia Beebe and Cailyn Brown came in second in 1:14.24. The distance medley relay team of Elizabeth Edler, Layla Shaver, Olivia Randall and Ella Randall also took second in 4:48.27.

On the field, Lillian Renze and Shaver finished 2-3 in the high jump after both cleared 4 feet, 4 inches.

Thompson took bronze in the 1,500 (5:30.70), while the Trojans’ sprint medley (Sophie Simms, Brown, Alayla Frederick and Eldridge) and 4×800 (Summer Kurth, Mia Christianson, Rachel Case and Jordan Hilleman) relay teams also finished third.

On the boys’ side, the Trojans totaled 79 points as host PCM won its own meet with 157. Dallas Center-Grimes (133) and Knoxville (119) gave chase, while Pleasantville (65) and the PCM junior varsity (20) finished up the standings.

More than half of West Marshall’s points came from four event victories. Kinnick Geers won the 100-meter dash (11.81); Erick Rosas Canchola claimed the 400 hurdles (1:00.82), Ryder Gile won the high jump (5-8) and the 4×200 foursome of Geers, Canchola, Turner DeRossett and Evan Siegert scored first in 1:34.88.

The Trojans’ sprint medley relay team of DeRossett, Calvin Streeter, Geers and Siegert settled for silver in 1:40.18, while four more West Marshall relays (4×100, shuttle hurdle, 4×800 and distance medley) earned third-place points.
